My Administration is announcing today a temporary pause on pending decisions of Liquefied Natural Gas exports – with the exception of unanticipated and immediate national security emergencies. During this period, we will take a hard look at the impacts of LNG exports on energy costs, America’s energy security, and our environment. This pause on new LNG approvals sees the climate crisis for what it is: the existential threat of our time.

citat

...freeze new export permits for liquified natural gas (LNG) until the Department of Energy (DoE) can figure out climate impacts.

meaning ... after expiration of the present ones one by one ... exports will be dropping ... until they find out...

i might be wrong

The Henry Hub gas price moves around by a percent or two most days and that's all that's happened today.

I read that it only relates to "new liquefied natural gas export projects" (new licences and extensions for new projects after 7 years when still in progress) in which case existing exports or extensions for those should not be affected.

It relates to "new liquefied natural gas export projects" so nothings changing with existing LNG exports anytime soon. Biden is also seriously denting his chances of re-election; maybe he doesn't fancy another 5 years in the White House.

US politics is crazy, but Biden's achilles heel (age and mental decrepitude aside) is perception of the economy and inflation. Folks notice pump prices.

I suppose an export ban might (a) reduce domestic prices and (b) increase export prices, but the US strategy seems to be to talk green, hammer foreign fossil fuel production, and ramp up US O&G production to make the rest of the world dependent upon US supply (paid for in dollars). The rest of the world is already paying prices far in excess of those paid by domestic consumers, which gives US manufacturing business a major competitive advantage.

One point worth bearing in mind though is that US oil reserves are very low and wil ave to be replenished at some time, preferably when the price is low, so a squeeze on oil exports might make some sense. But that does not apply to gas.

If the Republicans get in that will be in the shredder (along with the letter from the four minor democrats although that carries no weight) and it only relates to new licence applications so it won't affect existing licences.

The clever ones will get out before they get margin calls. Maybe that's what whites has been doing unless he's been stuck in a Cobra style meeting all morning.

It's clear the short sellers want DECs market cap to fall below the FYSE 250 exit threshold and then get tracker funds to sell. This may have happened earlier this week. The market cap is only 10% above the threshold.
Stakeholders need to ensure this does not happen.
