No position here...yet

Thinking out loud, when their expansion plans start to kick in, theoretically, it should be easy for PI's to monitor the performance, given their planned sites etc etc.

A few hours stood with a clip board outside their stores would be a great guide, especially if 'co-ordinated'?

I caught this snippet about "Greggs", and thought how relevant it is to Crawshaws too, i.e. the big potential in food-on-the go.

The boss of North East bakery chain Greggs has revealed his tactics to turn around the company.

After two tough years in 2012 and 2013, Greggs has moved from traditional services to a food on the go model.

Is this the location with the ability, in time, to deliver to 60 shops? If so, I would have thought an RNS would be in order.

I see it differently. If I was high calibre CEO material selected for interview I'd be pretty confident in my own ability and I'd be very careful to make sure a company I was potentially joining matched my ambitions. We've all researched companies we were interested in joining to see if they were potentially a good fit, that's what this guy/gal was doing ..... the fact he could drop it into an interview was a plus point. I'm also assuming that Richard and the selection panel will be experienced enough not to go all misty eyed because someone visited all the shops. And as Davidosh suggests, its a pretty good topic for a game changing interview question like "We think we are doing reasonably well , but tell me from what you saw , how can we improve ?"

Exactly, previous experience of a fast growing business and the problems associated with it are essential imv.

I can't imagine they'd select someone who'd visited all the shops. Hopefully they chose a candidate who'll manage others well, and think strategically, which doesn't include a tour round 20 butcher shops prior to selection!

I do not really want to labour on this as there is no need. A good interviewer will I am sure be in a good position to follow up on such a claim and say... what did you find that stood out at any particular store Mr Jones ? and how did that differ at the Frenchgate store....I would expect him to have a reasonable set of notes if he really went to all of them and would be rather lacking on detail if he had not !

Allegedly one of the applicants has put on 3 stone in weight during the interview process :-o

Fair point Ext, We need to remember its the CEO job to be extremely enthusiastic and positive about the Company

Unless its Ratner :-//

Hi David,

Thanks for a great Mello - it was worth it just for the Crawshaw sausages ;-> !

Serious Q : how would you rate a potential CEO who made the above claim ie visited all stores, even if (s)he hadn't ?

On the one hand, you could admire their 'smarts' in knowing what'll play well with the crowd......

On the other hand......well, you know the rest !

A street-wise CEO may be 'good' for the Co, but not necessarily good for the shareholders....

I'm reminded of Richard Nixon vs Jimmie Carter : who would you want in your corner in negotiations/conflict with the Russians ?

There were a lot of very smooth and persuasive CEO's etc presenting at Mello, are they a Good or a Bad Thing ?

Discuss !

ATB and thanks again for a great programme.

Indeed Shanklin, you can see they are already advertising for staff for the Hellaby shop on the recruitment page:
hxxp://www.crawshawbutchers.com/job-vacancies

Apparently, from what David told us one of the CEO candidates had visited all the shops before his interview so if they choose him I’m sure he’ll do very well.
