If Centrica alone in the energy sector was a faller I would agree with you Dave but it isn't. Admittedly Centrica hasn't kept pace with dividends compared with others but Conn concentrated on reducing debt and continues to see that as a priority which I agree with.
After 5 years of watching cna lose value along with my original investment 333p
i'm almost ready to call it a day. I'm sitting here at 3.00 a.m writing this because I can't sleep knowing the amount of money i'm losing after adding at 121.9p
and 112p. I'm not sure how much more I can take of this sort of stress.

Statements are always worded deceptively...they all approve each others pay rises and bonuses...

From the AR, Conn's performance in relation to meeting strategic objectives:"Overall, Iain has demonstrated exceptional leadership during the year; however, delivery has been behind the expectations of the market despite relatively attractive in-year TSR performance."So a 44% pay rise for failing to deliver his objectives, sweet!.

"The government are largely responsible for destroying the value in Centrica"Nope, those running the business have destroyed the value here.

Why not ask the remuneration committee how they base insiders salary, bonus etc etc...does it all tally up?..

Mitchy,Agree in terms of the tax but Conn has failed miserably, just read his performance assessment in the AR.Should also take on board that 2017 benefitted from tax credits and normalised tax is low 40's:"The Group adjusted effective tax rate increased to 41% (2017: 22%), largely due to a number of one-off credits in the 2017 charge. Adjusting for these credits, the Group's underlying adjusted effective tax rate for 2017 was 40%."That said statutory eps (which IMO is a better reflection of performance as the adjustments are out of kilter now) was down 44%.How can adjusted numbers be 3.5 times greater (as is the case with earnings) than statutory, no accountant but that seems totally misleading to me.

I have some sympathy with Conn. He has increased the operating profit but is was the rise in taxto 42% that knocked spots off the eps. Then on top that the price cap.The government are largely responsible for destroying the value in Centrica and the pending case in the courts against their actions will, I'm sure , confirm that their actions were illegal or ,at the very least, unfair. I trust Centrica will be asking for appropriate compensation

No doubt below from the media has been posted earlier but just in case for those who haven't read it...a typical 2 tier set up within Plc casino market...the insiders are in a win win situation regardless of the share price going up/down...or the insider a non performer...unlike a shareholder would buy shares and see the value of their so called investment go down down deeper down...now just imagine if everybody stopped buying shares directly or indirectly via fundies tomorrow in protest would the insiders still be getting paid grossly handsome packages as they are now?...capitalism works very well for the insiders...

The chief executive of British Gas owner Centrica pocketed a £2.4 million pay packet last year, despite the firm losing hundreds of thousands of customers as it embarked on a major jobs cull.

Iain Conn saw his total pay rise 44% from £1.68 million in 2017 as he reaped the rewards of an annual bonus, according to the company’s annual report.

It means that the energy boss is paid around 72 times more than the typical Centrica employee, who earns £33,718 on the firm’s lower quartile scale.

The report said : “Iain has shown significant resilience in the face of this challenge and has led the business through the shifting context, keeping the strategic objectives in sight and ensuring that the organisation remains adaptable and innovative.”

Hi portside,Last post before I press the big F button as it's clear you are a Walter Mitty type character. So you now hold 137,000 shares, based on your previous postings and assuming (which is a massive assumption but hey) you bought the remaining 21,000 shares at a very low average of 110p (which has only been hit last Friday and today) then your average would still be 121p......try again chap.Just a couple of more points, I'm not an idiot or a plonker and it's clear that it's your goodself that backs dogs not me!.Bye bye.Filtered

lostI agree, seems high to me, especially as according to glassdoor the average salary for British Gas call centre agents is about £20k pa. I wonder if the £34k quoted is the upper value of the lower quartile range, if that's the case then Conn could be on 122 times more than the lowest salaried employee.Either way a 44% pay rise is a smack in the face to shareholders and employees facing the axe, disgusting IMO.

Some interesting comparisons in the article - a lower quartile salary of almost £34k. Am I alone in thinking this is a very high 'lower quartile figure. I've said for years they need to cut the fat - I think this is one area why they are finding it hard to compete.
