Hi rar100,

This isn't a 'debt repayment'.

I think you'll find there's a difference between attitude towards a bond (with a credit rating) and a court order: Argentina (and other countries) may play fast and loose with the former (held by a fragmented interest group and which have to follow a certain protocol, dictated by the bond prospectus.)

Less so AIUI with the latter, where armed with an enforceable (non-negotiable) US court order, the plaintiff can peremptorily seize assets located physically outside Argentina - ships, aircraft, buildings, financial assets, etc. They don't necessarily have - or even want - to do so, but the power to do so in itself usually encourages a more constructive attitude to engagement.

AIUI

I think there are 2 possible situations going on
1. Negotiations underway, If this is to be a solution the Argentine government will need to be involved.
2. Judge Preska taking her time on what I see is a Landmark case.
I wouldn’t like to suggest which one is happening, but prefer no.1

All cases get resolved. They only take on ones they think they can win. But once they go to court the ball is in the judges court. What we don't know is whether the parties have asked her to hold off as they are close to a negotiated settlement

Does every case eventually get resolved as either a win or a loss or do some Peter out without resolution?

It's not about the complexity of the case but the importance of the judgment. This will determine the conditions upon which a foreign government can privatise a company on an exchange and then renationalise it. It is of huge significance and the judge will want to weigh every word carefully

“Are we nearly there yet?” Is this judgment taking forever? Thought it was a slam dunk? Yours, forever hopeful.

BUR up 25% from the mid-October low and today was the highest volume on an up day since then. So, someone still has an appetite to buy and may suggest news soon. US quote up on low volume.

Hello SamThis article title indicates what many LTHS believe that the model has been established and has not one but hundreds of cases being in various stages in the process. Most will win, yes some will lose. The BIG one case holds the share price back because of the what if we lose factor. If a win onwards and upwards, if a loss then retrench in share price and confirmation to the nay sayers who would state told you so, but in the back ground hundreds of cases are still in motion. https://seekingalpha.com/article/4546989-burford-capital-downside-appears-limited-ypf-is-a-free-lottery-ticketThe LTHs believe the Argentinian government broke the legal promises they made. Judge Preska will decide hopefully soon.

huh, and what will happen if they get nothing from Argentina case?
(e.g. ruling not in their favor).
We do realize it's quite real possibility, right?

Certainly the change in accounting for bonuses was poorly timed given the number of shareholders who are/were probably below water. If Petersen comes in, I suspect all will be forgiven!

Well, true - it's more the financial numbers and terminology they use (rather than the quite good narrative) that I have trouble cobbling together to form a judgement. And pay is opaque - only recently they belatedly corrected the omission of bonuses.

t_t, not sure why you point the finger at Burford. Their annual and interim reports are a model of plain English discussion to describe in detail what is a very complex business. Perhaps you should try reading them.

The times - "for 30 years companies have deliberately made their pay arrangements complex and opaque to the point of incomprehension. The reason shareholders don’t understand their business models is because companies, with a few honourable exceptions, are terrible at (a) explaining what they do in plain English, let alone (b) setting out the main sensitivities that could boost or derail their plans."

Hmm, at least one company springs to mind! Amid widespread shareholder insurrections, Burford's investors seem remarkably indulgent, so far!

Judgments, like the YPF expropriation case, are posted in the court's docket. Lawyers, plaintiffs, defendants, the media, you and I, will find out the outcome at the same time. The docket remains open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

If Judge Preska is concerned about the market's reaction, she will publish it over the weekend or in the early hours (Eastern Time), ahead of LSE opening bell. That would give enough time for London traders to wake up their counterparts in the U.S.

I just don't see this happening. IMHO, she will publish this thing whenever she wants without considering the market's reaction. I could be wrong.

Finally, she may give a heads-up to both sides' legal teams that the ruling is coming within hours, but there's no way she will tell them them what the actual ruling is. That would spell a whole lot of trouble for her.

BUR was "collecting energy", consolidating, getting cases ripen etc ... for too long

also ROE, divi, ROI (to the shareholders - eg after tax, non adjusted) etc ... is catastrophically bellow standard of any decent performing and growing business

it is time to explode and start performing ... consolidation - seen in the channel will end some time....

it is a good strategy to accumulate at the bottom of the channel and sell some at the top (not all)

I like BUR for being:

- cash rich (they do not need more cash to exist)
- can prosper in turmoil
- have huge margin of safety (expenses)

so I am adding for the last few days. good time to buy imho

but do not trust in the BOD fair game btw
