Investor meetings in Europe next week, almost certainly further newsflow, possible update on a NASDAQ listing, no need to worry about the Hotel star ratings. Tom W

Henchard, I’m not sure which part you’re struggling to understand? Of course they haven’t YET reduced their short, but I’m trying to anticipate what might be about to happen. Whenever one tries to anticipate what might be about to happen (in any given situation, not just this one) one could be proven right or wrong once further time elapses. But you just keep stating what has ALREADY happened (you only seem able to look backwards!). In investing, it’s useful to look forwards!

Note that Vannin taken out by PE firm Fortress. Undisclosed price and note CEO and CFO stepping aside. So support for the sector, though the debate over public or private may be escalated by this move. Also note positive reports from Liberum and Caro-Kahn (latter had central valuation of c $49 at start of this year).Shout if you want to see the latter – it is a pretty comprehensive take down of MW (who they know and respect).May feel scary, but this is opportunity to accumulate cheap stock for the long-term in a market where uncorrelated assets will increasingly trade at a premium given capital risk in traditional assets becoming ever more acute....

This will close up again today, as it continues its recovery. Only a few weeks to go until the ex-divi date, I look forward to short morons having to pay me my dividend, which the Conmpany will no doubt substantially increase again.

gettingrichslow,

The fact is Gladstone has upped its bet against BUR over the last couple of months, the last occasion being after BUR's 2 Sep explanation of its Napo investment.

Since Gladstone's reported increase on 4 Sep, it's neither increased nor reduced its position.

So I say again, a rational conclusion is that the fundamentals of its short thesis - whatever it is - haven't changed.

Yet you are arguing it "might well have changed" because "they’ve not increased their short further since 04 Sep." If it had changed, why haven't they reduced/closed?

For God's sake man, use your brain.

You may find it beneficial to google the dictionary definition of the word ‘might’?
Then it’s possible that you’ll see how I can suggest that.
Then you could reflect on the fact that they’ve not increased their short further since 04 Sep, when if their thesis hasn’t changed you might (there’s that hard to understand word again) have expected them to, given the strong rise in share price
Then you might consider why no other hedge fund has decided to short this above the disclosure threshold. Even MW closed. Why?
If you do all of that you might understand.

Just saying that continuing to increase their short position after all of BUR's rebuttals of MW, suggests Gladstone believe their own short thesis - whatever it is - hasn't changed. You think it "might well have changed" but given their rising bet against BUR even after BUR's rebuttals, I don't see how you can suggest that. I'd say my assumption is perfectly rational.

Henchard, but as you say, you don’t know their short thesis, and therefore you can’t possibly know whether the fundamentals of that thesis have changed or not. They might well have changed. So why assume they won’t have changed? Could it be that you only like to see things from a negative perspective? And are you even clear on what your own thesis is? It sounds like you are not. You seem to just make a lot of assumptions without any clear rationale.

Gladstone have been increasing their short the last couple of months.

Their first disclosable position was back in June at around 1,500p so I guess they've got plenty of headroom on profit to stay short if they think there's more downside to come.

They haven't gone public with their short thesis as far as I can see, but if the fundamentals of it haven't changed, I don't see why they'd close just because the share price has bounced a bit and retail investors on financial discussion boards are saying shorters are going to get burnt.

Yes Gladstone would need to buy about £20 million so hopefully that would have a fairly positive effect

Sparusty, it will be interesting to see what happens when Gladstone close their short. That could signal a big push upwards.
