I am not sure what happens to the pension deficit if and when BA goes into administration. The shares will of course be worthless and that should make UNITE very happy.

Cabin Crew jobs are not being defended, they are being destroyed by a bunch bloody-minded militants. When BA goes into administration, there will be no jobs for anyone in the Company. UNITE will have achieved what it set out to do, led by Woodley and Simpson. This is a very sad day for BA !

Alphorn,
I agree but magnanimity is always the best way forward when the end of a dispute is in sight. This might sound to some as weakness but I believe it is not.
Beyond all this as you rightly point out the elephant in the room however is the pension defict. There will eventually be a very big shock for some investors here. The company has given a figure for the deficit but the authorities have not even acknowledged that the basis of the calculation is even remotely close. Personally I just hope that I will still be able to travel the world from T5. Just how convenient is T5!

BA strike - it's not about pay, it's about dignity
Common sense and justice prevailed this week when the Court of Appeal finally threw out BA's attempt to prevent cabin crew from striking. This was a victory for all trade unionists and everybody concerned for democratic rights.

This means that, unless BA makes the most of this pause for peace to seek an acceptable solution, the BA strike will be back on. From next Monday, May 24th, the first of three five day strikes will begin.

This is not a dispute for extra pay or for better conditions. Cabin crew are in dispute because British Airways wants to destroy our union and are prepared to attack its own workforce in order to do so.

Our members are not prepared to let this happen. They need your support. Please take two minutes to find out what's happening at BA - click here www.brutish-airways.com

Unite and BA were close to a deal that could have been considered by crew bringing down costs and allowed BA to restructure its business. Cabin crew know their industry is suffering and have offered tens of millions of pounds in savings to make BA competitive.

But BA's refusal to drop the vindictive punishment of thousands of staff who took lawful action to defend their jobs, including more than 50 crew suspended and seven sacked, means that the dispute cannot be resolved. No union could tolerate this situation.

There is a better way, if management has the sense to grasp it. All that stands in the way of peace is BA's insistence on persecuting workers who are frightened for their futures.

BA cabin crew now need your support. Watch our short film to see why crew are striking. Click here www.brutish-airways.com

Help our members end the bullying in BA. We want you to support crew by telling BA's Chairman, Martin Broughton what is really going on in his company - click www.brutish-airways.com

The cost of peace is zero – the price of bullying will be catastrophic. Please send this on to your colleagues and help our members win their fight for a say in their future.

Thank you

Another nail in BAY's coffin as the International Accounting Standards Board has proposed rules to toughen the way pension obligations are reported with underfunded schemes about to attract more unwelcome attention?
IMO BAY needs to grasp the nettle and go into administration to sort out its finances once and for all.

OG - You must agree though that the dispute needs sorting; not just patching up to resurface at a later date.

wow400,
There are always casualties in industrial relations let alone industrial action. The company cannot afford to be vindictive even if they wipe the floor with the union. That is the real world and if Willie is just indulging in machismo then there is no doubt shareholders will suffer extra, unnecessary pain. Whatever the outcome anyone who gloats is a fool.

wow400,
Industrial relations are a fact of life and if one doesn't push the other will pull. It is claimed that the union would give in to every demand of the company if the change in travel perks was undone. Now I can't guarantee that this position is true but if it is then Willie is taking an extraordinary risk with the company balance sheet over such an issue. I am not a "unionist" myself but I suspect that if I were in the place of the union members I would say "what the heck" and go for the most damaging option on the basis of you hurt me I will hurt you. A purely vindictive stance but I believe a normal human reaction.

But why should he give the strikers back their staff travel?
They knew what they were getting into when they went on strike!
IMHO, it would demean all the other cabin crew that went to work....

Nope, it's Unite that need to give up

They have agreed to all the changes Walsh wanted - it is Walsh who is holding up the settlement - when a company has lost £1,000,000,000 - do you really think you should be blaming the people who pour the tea and coffee?

This is a good day for UNITE and the cabin crew as they strive to bring BA to its knees. Lets hope that Willie holds firm. Its better to die fighting than give into intimidation. Can't imagine that any employer would give a job to a waitress or waiter who put BA on their CV.

The Unions need to take a lesson in winning battles and wars. They have won this battle but when the Compnay goes under they will have certanily lost the war.
.....idiots......and this coming from someone who is short BAY.

It will go lower IMO.
