Budget will hurt UK wage growth, Goldman Sachs warns


UK consumer spending is set to slump next year and dent UK growth, analysts at Goldman Sachs have warned, as the impact of the Budget ripples through the economy.

The rise to employers’ national insurance (NI) contributions will lead to slower wage growth for staff and higher costs for consumers, the investment bank wrote in a note to investors.

“We expect consumer spending growth to moderate in [the second half of] next year, as real disposable income growth falls back,” analysts at the bank wrote. “This partly reflects slowing real wage growth; we expect private sector pay increases to cool, partly because of the employer NI increase being passed onto consumers.”

The intervention from the bank follows weeks of dire warnings from businesses and industry bodies, and comes just days after analysts at rival lender Deutsche Bank warned that Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision could cost the economy over 100,000 jobs.

Goldman also warned that the effect of the employer NI hike would be amplified by the higher net payments that homeowners can expect to have to pay for their mortgages.

The bank added that workers’ disposable incomes will be dented further still by the continued freeze to income tax thresholds, meaning as wages rise with inflation, an ever increasing number of people are sucked into higher income tax bands.

MOSCOW, November 18. /TASS/. Russian troops liberated the community of Novoalekseyevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) over the past day in the special military operation in Ukraine, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Monday.

"Battlegroup Center units liberated the settlement of Novoalekseyevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic as a result of active and decisive operations," the ministry said in a statement.

Russia’s Battlegroup North inflicts 50 casualties on Ukrainian army in Kharkov area
Russia’s Battlegroup North inflicted roughly 50 casualties on Ukrainian troops in its area of responsibility in the Kharkov Region over the past day, the ministry reported.

"In the Kharkov direction, Battlegroup North units inflicted losses on formations of the Ukrainian army’s 57th motorized infantry brigade and the 5th border guard detachment of Ukraine’s Border Guard Service near the settlements of Volchansk, Basovo and Kazachya Lopan in the Kharkov Region," the ministry said.

The Ukrainian army lost as many as 50 personnel and two motor vehicles in that frontline area over the past 24 hours, it specified.

Russia’s Battlegroup West inflicts 450 casualties on Ukrainian army over past day
Russia’s Battlegroup West inflicted roughly 450 casualties on Ukrainian troops and destroyed three US-made artillery guns in its area of responsibility over the past day, the ministry reported.

"Battlegroup West units improved their tactical position and inflicted losses on manpower and equipment of the Ukrainian army’s 28th, 60th, 63rd, 67th and 116th mechanized and 119th territorial defense brigades in areas near the settlements of Zagryzovo, Kupyansk and Glushkovka in the Kharkov Region, Krasny Liman and Torskoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic. They repelled three counterattacks by assault groups of the Ukrainian army’s 14th mechanized and 1st National Guard brigades," the ministry said.

The Ukrainian army’s losses in that frontline area over the past 24 hours amounted to 450 personnel, an armored combat vehicle, six motor vehicles, a Polish-manufactured 155mm Krab self-propelled artillery system, a 155mm Bogdana self-propelled artillery gun, a 155mm M198 howitzer and two 105mm M119 artillery guns of US manufacture, a 122mm Gvozdika motorized artillery system and a 122mm D-30 howitzer, it specified.

In addition, Russian troops destroyed two Anklav-N electronic warfare stations and two field ammunition depots of the Ukrainian army, it said.

Russia’s Battlegroup South inflicted roughly 695 casualties on Ukrainian troops and destroyed two US-made artillery guns in its area of responsibility over the past day, the ministry reported.

"Battlegroup South units improved their frontline positions and inflicted casualties on formations of the Ukrainian army’s 54th mechanized, 10th mountain assault, 81st airmobile, 79th air assault and 124th territorial defense brigades in areas near the settlements of Seversk, Dronovka, Andreyevka, Annovka, Dachnoye and Kurakhovo in the Donetsk People’s Republic. They repulsed two counterattacks by assault groups of the Ukrainian army’s 46th airmobile brigade," the ministry said.

The Ukrainian army’s losses in that frontline area over the past 24 hours amounted to 695 personnel, two tanks, two armored personnel carriers, an armored combat vehicle, 12 motor vehicles, a 152mm Msta-B howitzer, four 152mm D-20 howitzers, a 122mm D-30 howitzer and two US-made 105mm M119 artillery guns, it specified.

In addition, Russian forces destroyed two electronic warfare stations and six field ammunition depots of the Ukrainian army over the past 24 hours, it said.

Over the past 24 hours, Battlegroup Center units "inflicted losses on manpower and equipment of the Ukrainian army’s 54th and 100th mechanized, 142nd infantry and 116th territorial defense brigades near the settlements of Dzerzhinsk, Voznesenka and Ukrainka in the Donetsk People’s Republic. They repelled 11 counterattacks by assault groups of the Ukrainian army’s 23rd and 151st mechanized, 71st and 152nd jaeger brigades and the Lyut assault brigade of Ukraine’s national police," the ministry said.

The Ukrainian army’s losses in that frontline area over the past 24 hours totaled more than 500 personnel, an M113 armored personnel carrier and a 155mm M777 howitzer of US manufacture, a pickup truck, a Polish-made 155mm Krab self-propelled artillery system, two 152mm D-20 howitzers, a 122mm Gvozdika motorized artillery system, two 122mm D-30 howitzers and two 100mm Rapira anti-tank guns, it specified.

Russia’s Battlegroup East inflicted roughly 135 casualties on Ukrainian troops and destroyed a US-made HIMARS multiple launch rocket system in its area of responsibility over the past day, the ministry reported.

"Battlegroup East units gained more advantageous lines and positions and inflicted losses on formations of the Ukrainian army’s 33rd mechanized, 37th marine infantry, 123rd and 129th territorial defense brigades in areas near the settlements of Zelyonoye Pole, Ulakly, Konstantinopol and Velikaya Novosyolka in the Donetsk People’s Republic. They repelled a counterattack by formations of the Ukrainian army’s 32nd mechanized brigade," the ministry said.

The Ukrainian army’s losses in that frontline area over the past 24 hours amounted to 135 personnel, an armored combat vehicle, two motor vehicles, a 152mm Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system, a 155mm M777 howitzer and a HIMARS multiple rocket launcher of US manufacture, it specified.

In addition, Russian forces destroyed a field ammunition depot of the Ukrainian army, it said.

Russian air defense forces shot down 106 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and four Hammer smart bombs over the past day, the ministry reported.

Overall, the Russian Armed Forces have destroyed 648 Ukrainian warplanes, 283 helicopters, 36,174 unmanned aerial vehicles, 586 surface-to-air missile systems, 19,369 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 1,490 multiple rocket launchers, 18,125 field artillery guns and mortars and 28,492 special military motor vehicles since the start of the special military operation, the ministry reported.

Russian Advance In Pokrovsk Direction Resumed With New Victories

The Russian army is successfully developing offensive in different directions on Ukrainian frontlines. On November 18th, the Russian Ministry of Defense officially confirmed the full control of the village of Novoalekseevka in the Pokrosvsk direction.

The village of Novoalekseevka is located southwest of Selidovo. Russian assault on the village began on November 2nd. According to the reports from the front, the village came under Russian control in about two days of fighting. Soldiers of the Russian 80th Guards Tank Regiment of the Center group of forces raised the Russian flag in the village on November 4th

The village of Novoaleksevka is an important stronghold from where the Russian army will develop its offensive on Pokrovsk. Russian forces are rapidly expanding their zone of control west of Novoalekseevka. According to preliminary reports from the front, they launched assault on the village of Pustinka advanced toward Pushkino and Zheltoe. Clashes are ongoing near Yurievka.
