How a 90% tax rate could apply on some UK pensions post Budget


The precise rules as to how this will work remain subject to confirmation

One of the biggest shockwaves from Rachel Reeves’ first Budget was felt by those with large pension pots, with many to be brought within the inheritance tax (IHT) net from 6 April 2027. As a result, some taxpayers may find the foundations of their IHT planning is now on shaky ground, according to RSM’s Chris Etherington.

At the moment, the majority of unused pension funds do not form part of an individual’s estate for IHT purposes. In the future, the proposed changes will mean that individuals may not be able to pass on these unused pension funds on death without an IHT charge. Instead, the pension scheme administrator will need to make a report to HMRC on the death of a member of any unused pension and pay IHT due from the pension pot.

UK housing market confidence hits yearly high despite rising costs – Barclays Property Insights


Acording to the latest Barclays Property Insights report, rent and mortgage spending grew by 6.4% in October, the highest rate recorded since September 2023, ahead of the recent MPC announcement on the Base Rate.

Despite the increase in spending, consumers felt more confident in affording their housing payments.

More than half of Brits (55%) expressed confidence in their ability to meet monthly rental or mortgage costs, up from 53% in September. Concerns about rising interest rates held steady at 60%, down from 63% in June 2024.

Barclays Property Insights reported that eight in ten Brits (79%) are worried about the energy price cap increase, with 42% concerned about rising household bills. However, spending on utilities fell by 13% year-on-year, as prices remained below levels seen in 2023.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is achieving an astonishing victory in the US presidential election 2024.

According to available data, he is about to become 47th president of the United States. In the case of victory, Trump will be the first president to serve two nonconsecutive terms since Grover Cleveland in 1892.

Trump is winning in all seven swing states. He captured the battleground states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia and holding leads in the other four.

In Pennsylvania, Trump is going to get 19 electoral votes. The same applies to Georgia and North Carolina with their 16 votes each, Arizona with its 11 votes, as well as to Wisconsin and Nevada with 10 and 6 electoral votes, respectively.

Even pro-democratic media outlets admit that Trump is “very likely” to return to the White House after taking the lead over Democratic rival Kamala Harris in seven swing states. For example, the NYT has put Trump’s chances of winning the election at more than 95%, estimating that he has secured 306 electoral college votes out of 270 required for victory, compared to 232 for Harris.

Russian Army Continues To Crush Kiev Forces In Kursk (Videos)

The Russian military’s Sever Group of Forces inflicted heavy losses on several Ukrainian formations and repelled four counter-attacks by Kiev forces in the Kursk direction, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on November 6.

In its daily briefing, the ministry said that Ukraine’s 21st, 22nd, 41st, and 115th mechanized brigades, 17th Tank Brigade, 82nd and 95th air assault brigades, 36th Marine Brigade, 112th and 129th territorial defense brigades took losses close to the settlements of Daryino, Leonidovo, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Novoivanovka, and Plyokhovo.

Meanwhile, the counter attacks were repelled near Leonidovo, according to the ministry, which reported heavy human and material losses. .

“The enemy lost up to 30 people killed and wounded, two United States-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, one armored fighting vehicle, and one motor vehicle,” it said.

In addition, the ministry announced that Russian air and artillery strikes hit gatherings of the 22nd, 41st, 47th, 61st mechanized brigades, 17th Tank Brigade, 80th, 95th air assault brigades, 36th Marine Brigade, 1st Special Operations Brigade, 112th, 129th territorial defense brigades, and 17th National Guard Brigade.

The gatherings were targeted near the settlements of Aleksandriya, Guyevo, Daryino, Kruglenkoye, Kurilovka, Leonidovo, Martynovka, Makhnovka, Melovy, Mirny, Mikhaylovka, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Nikolsky, Novoivanovka, Plyokhovo, Sverdlikovo, Sudzha, and Cherkasskoye Porechnoye.

Other strikes hit the Ukrainian region of Sumy, according to the ministry, which said that the reserves of the 22nd, 47th, 115th mechanized brigades, 95th Air Assault Brigade, 1st Special Operations Brigade, and 129th Territorial Defence Brigade were hit close to the settlements of Belovody, Varachino, Zhuravka, Iskrikovshchina, Kositsa, Loknya, Miropolye, and Pavlovka.

“In the past 24 hours, the AFU [Armed Forces of Ukraine] losses amounted to more than 250 troops, eight infantry fighting vehicles including two U.S.-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and six armored fighting vehicles as well as two artillery guns, two mortars, and eight motor vehicles,” the ministry detailed in its briefing.

Videos shared on social networks showed some of the Russian strikes that recently hit Kiev forces in the direction of Kursk.

Kiev forces attacked Kursk last August. The Russian military is currently conducting a counter-attack. So far, nearly half of the settlements initially occupied by Ukrainian troops have been liberated.

According to the Russian MoD, since the start of the battle in Kursk Kiev forces have lost 30,050 troops, 184 tanks, 115 infantry fighting vehicles, 107 armored personnel carriers, 1,088 armored fighting vehicles, 817 motor vehicles, 261 artillery guns, 40 launchers, including 11 American-made HIMARS and six MLRS systems, 11 air defense systems, seven transport-loading vehicles, 59 electronic warfare stations, 12 counter-battery radars, four aerial radars, 26 engineering vehicles, including 13 counter obstacle vehicles, one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle, five armored recovery vehicle, and one command post vehicle.
