Fuller’s pub boss warns Budget tax changes will drive hospitality to the brink

The boss of pub chain Fuller, Smith and Turner has made a stark warning about the effect of recent tax rises on hospitality, warning it will increase inflation and drive businesses “to the wall”.

Chair of the London-listed firm known as Fuller’s, Michael Turner, said that the changes to employer’s national insurance contributions (NICs) announced in the budget “will cause particular pain” and “has been brought about by the Chancellor’s inadvisable promise not to increase taxes on individuals”.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves increased the amount employers have to pay in NICs by 1.2 per cent, and lowered the wage threshold employers must start paying the tax from £9,100 to £5,000.

The change will primarily affect industries which rely heavily on labour like hospitality and agriculture. Hospitality will be further affected by the threshold change, as many businesses rely heavily on part-time workers which were previously exempt from the tax.

Turner claimed “the Chancellor’s actions are a direct attack on those labour-intensive industries that are the lifeblood of our economy, whilst leaving the large City institutions, that can afford to pay their share, almost completely untouched.”

“The unintended consequences of these actions will be to drive inflation higher, put pressure on wages, and will drive many businesses to the wall,” Turner said, adding that he hoped the government would “reflect on its decisions”.

This is why people vote for Trump and Reform. We've all had enough of this .

Moment council meeting descends into chaos as locals are told migrants 'will be given private healthcare' despite 'very stretched' services

A council meeting descended into chaos after locals were told hundreds of illegal migrants staying at a hotel could soon be getting access to free private healthcare.

The bombshell accusation was made during a fiery public meeting of Trafford Council, in Greater Manchester, sparking an outcry of anger from local residents.

Nathan Evans, Conservative group leader at the council, claimed asylum seekers housed at the Cresta Court Hotel in Altrincham had been contracted to a private 'doctors' system'.

The death toll in the Gaza Strip has not stop rising. Dozens more civilians were killed and wounded in the recent strikes of the Israeli military across the enclave.

At least 11 Gazans murdered, several more were wounded as a result of the Israeli airstrikes in northern Rafah. The death toll since dawn across Gaza raised to about 30 people after an Israeli air strike on an overcrowded area in Deir el-Balah city. A rocket fired by an Israeli fighter jet hit a refugee camp. The explosion claimed the lives of six people, reportedly including two newborn babies.

Israeli forces killed at least 10 Palestinians in the so-called “humanitarian zone” in Gaza’s al-Mawasi. An Israeli drone attack has hit a tent cafe.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least 43,665 people have been killed and 103,076 wounded in Israeli military attacks on Gaza since October 7, 2023. Of those, 62 Palestinians were killed and 147 wounded in the latest 48-hour reporting period, the ministry added. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day and more than 200 were taken captive.

The UN Human Rights Office has reported that 70% of those killed by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip are women and children.

Amid the ongoing indiscriminate strikes by the Israeli Air Force in the Gaza Strip, the dire humanitarian situation persists, caused by a shortage of medicines and food supplies. Tel Aviv is blocking the delivery of humanitarian aid. The World Health Organization has warned that healthcare conditions for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have deteriorated to an “apocalyptic” state.

Today, the military was forced to open one of the land crossings near Khan Yunis for several trucks with food, water, and medicines to move to the central and southern parts of Gaza. Israel did this under pressure from the United States. Washington threatened Tel Aviv that if the Israelis did not increase the flow of humanitarian aid to the enclave within 30 days, the Americans would limit the delivery of weapons and military equipment to the Jewish state. The White House also demanded humanitarian pauses and an end to the isolation of the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

Pound To Euro (GBP/EUR) Exchange Rate Subdued As UK Unemployment Jumps

The time of writing GBP/EUR was trading at around €1.2070. Virtually unchanged from Tuesday's opening levels.

The Pound (GBP) struggled to attract support on Tuesday morning as GBP investors were underwhelmed by the UK’s latest jobs report.

According to data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), UK employment rose to 4.3% in September. A sharp jump from the 4% recorded in August and above forecasts for a more modest rise to 4.1%.

However, the startling rise in unemployment was at least partly offset by the accompanying wage growth figures. These reported that total earnings unexpectedly jumped from 3.9% to 4.3% after the government increased civil service pay over the summer.

Crisis at Asda deepens as sales slump ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period

Asda’s share of the grocery market has crashed to a record low after a slump in business ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period.

In a report that will make grim reading for boss Lord Rose, research group Kantar revealed that sales at the supermarket chain totalled £4.2billion in the 12 weeks to November 3.

That was 5.5 per cent lower than the same period a year earlier – making it the worst performing grocer in the country.

Five major banks hike fixed rate mortgages:

"Rachel Reeves, extra borrowing and higher taxes has pushed up the price of government debt and will feed inflation which puts pressure on sterling which requires interest rates to be higher for longer. That's why. Banks like the rest of us are pessimistic about the economy..Because no one wants to lend to a Labour government that is ruining the economy without a risk premium"..

The Daily Mail

Five major banks hike fixed rate mortgages: Why are costs RISING after the Bank of England cut?

Santander, TSB, HSBC, Virgin Money and Nationwide Building Society have all announced prices across their fixed rate mortgage deals will rise this week.

Last week, Nationwide, TSB and Santander were among a number of lenders to announce they were cutting mortgage rates across tracker and variable rate deals, in response to the Bank of England cutting base rate from 5 per cent to 4.75 per cent, on Thursday.

The markets are still feeling the aftershocks of the Labour Budget. Although it wasn’t as disastrous as the mini-Budget, the longer-term cost of borrowing continues to rise.

'Gilt yields and swap rates are reacting not only to budgetary policy but also to geopolitical uncertainties, including Trump’s re-election to the White House. Anyone holding out for big cuts in interest rates is taking a gamble for now.'

'Adding to the pressure, swap rates—key indicators used by lenders to price fixed-rate mortgages—have edged upward, further necessitating these adjustments,' says Nicholas Mendes, mortgage technical manager at John Charcol.

'The combination of market dynamics and rising swap rates highlights the difficult landscape borrowers are navigating.'

UK may have to provide troops to Kiev if US cuts aid – Boris Johnson

The West will supposedly face “an even bigger threat” if “Ukraine goes down,” the former PM has claimed

The UK cannot let Ukraine suffer a defeat in its ongoing conflict with Russia, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told GB News in an interview published on Tuesday. London could go as far as sending in troops if Kiev “goes down,” he warned.

According to Johnson, Russia’s success in Ukraine would spark a security crisis for the US and its allies on a multitude of fronts. “It’ll be the Baltic states. It’ll be in Georgia. You’ll see the impact of a Ukrainian defeat in the Pacific theater. You’ll see it in the South China Sea,” the politician said, without specifying what exactly could happen in those regions.

He also described military and financial assistance to Kiev as a “sensible investment” and a “good” way to spend public funds, arguing that the UK would supposedly have to pay much more otherwise because “our collective security will be really degraded by a resurgent Russia threatening all sorts of parts of Europe.”

The former prime minister also pointed to the prospect of the US cutting aid to Kiev as a potential risk, claiming some people with “wrong” views on the issue were in president-elect Donald Trump’s inner circle.

“Donald Trump has lots of different voices in his ears and there’s a front of the Republican Party, quite a lot of them actually, who take the wrong line on Ukraine,” he said.

If aid to Ukraine is reduced and Kiev starts losing, London could be forced to deploy troops to the region, Johnson claimed. “We will then have to pay to send British troops to help defend Ukraine,” the politician stated.

Russia has repeatedly stated that it had no plans to attack NATO or any of its members. At the same time, Moscow has also warned on multiple occasions that by providing military aid to Kiev, the bloc increases the risk of a direct clash, specifying that it would treat the provision of long-range missiles for Ukrainian attacks deep inside Russian territory as a direct assault by the countries which had supplied the weapons.

Earlier, Putin ordered changes to the nation’s nuclear doctrine that listed attacks by a non-nuclear state supported by a nuclear power as a reason for a nuclear response on Russia’s part, among other things.

Last week, The Telegraph reported that the UK, together with France, could push for further escalation of the Ukraine conflict by attempting to convince Washington to allow Kiev strike targets deep inside Russia with Western weapons, including Storm Shadow/Scalp cruise missiles.

Johnson himself was accused of being instrumental in disrupting the peace talks between Moscow and Kiev back in spring of 2022. Talks in Istanbul had produced a text that was agreed by Russian and Ukrainian negotiators at that time. The head of the Ukrainian delegation in Istanbul, MP David Arakhamia, later admitted that Kiev pulled out of that deal after Johnson urged it to “just fight” Russia, during a visit to the Ukrainian capital.

Barclays (BARC.L)

Trump's policies are expected to drive inflation higher. Given this data is monitored closely by central banks to help guide interest rate decisions, this means rates could stay higher for longer.

The US Federal Reserve cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point in its November meeting, though this was still at range of 4.5%-4.75%.

Streeter said that rates remaining elevated is "likely to be a tailwind for banks as can boost net income margins".

"Barclays is one of the largest global investment banks and has a sizeable US credit card business so has the potential to make more money on loans in such an environment," said Streeter.

"However, further ahead there is a risk that higher borrowing costs could affect US economic growth further down the line and push up default rates again."

Another expected focus for the new Trump administration is deregulation and lower taxes.

"A lighter regulatory touch might reduce compliance costs and stimulate capital markets through favourable policies, which Barclays could also benefit from," Streeter said.

Russian Army Keeps Moving To The West

Support SouthFront

Amid the political turbulence, the war in Ukraine keeps going. The Russian army maintains the initiative and keeps steadily advancing on different frontlines.

On the night of November 8th, Ukrainian rear infrastructure came under a new wave of Russian strikes.

The capital of Ukraine Kiev continues coming under Russian daily attacks. Today was not an exception. Russian strikes were reported in the area of Bila Tserkva and on the outskirts of the city of Kiev.

A series of large explosions thundered in the southern city of Odessa and the surrounding region. A large fire was filmed in the area. According to preliminary reports, several targets were destroyed near the local airport and in the seaport.

Ukrainian military positions and infrastructure in the tactical rear in the east of the country are pounded by Russian artillery, drones, missiles and heavy bombs. At night, the Armed Forces of Ukraine came under Russian strikes all along the front. Russian strikes were also recorded in the Dnepropetrovsk and Zhitomir regions.

Russian drones also targeted regions in western Ukraine. Explosions thundered in the Ternopil region, where the previous Russian attacks destroyed large fuel depots and targeted logistics hubs used for the transfer of weapons from NATO to Ukraine.

In their turn, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted another wave of drone strikes in the western regions of Russia. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, at least 17 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed in four Russian regions, including in the rear region of Saratov.

Unlike the massive Russian attacks, the Ukrainian daily strikes have no effect on the ongoing hostilities and do not change the power balance on the frontlines.

Ukrainian military sources sound the alarm about the new stage of a Russian offensive in the Kursk region. Russian assault operations reportedly intensified on the northern flank in the areas of Malaya Loknya and Daryino. Russian attacks were even reported in Sudzha. So far, some tactical advance of the Russian troops has been confirmed, but time will show if another large-scale offensive begins. Russian assault groups are currently conducting combat reconnaissance, grinding down Ukrainian reserves with heavy fire.

Meanwhile, the front does not stop moving in the Donbass. On November 8th, the Russian Ministry of Defense officially confirmed control of the village of Kremennaya Balka. The Ukrainian garrison there slowed down a further Russian assault north of Kurakhovo.

South of Kurakhovo, the Armed Forces of Ukraine fail to stop Russian advances in different directions. The Russian units have largely expanded their zone of control. They do not stop attacking, they regroup their forces and repel Ukrainian counterattacks, forcing the enemy to retreat.
