Pizza Hut UK hunts buyer amid Budget tax hike crisis



Pizza Hut's biggest UK franchisee has begun approaching potential bidders as it scrambles to mitigate the looming impact of tax hikes announced in last month's Budget.

Sky News has learnt that Heart With Smart (HWS), which operates roughly 140 Pizza Hut dine-in restaurants, has instructed advisers to find a buyer or raise tens of millions of pounds in external funding.

City sources said this weekend that the process, which is being handled by Interpath Advisory, had got under way in recent days and was expected to result in a transaction taking place in the next few months.

Insiders suggested that the increases to the national living wage and employers' national insurance contributions (NICs) unveiled by Rachel Reeves would add approximately £4m to HWS's annual costs - equivalent to more than half of last year's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation.

Budget tax hike could destroy 100,000 jobs, Deutsche Bank estimates


The hike to employers’ national insurance in last month’s Budget could end up costing the economy over 100,000 jobs, according to research from Deutsche Bank.

In last month’s Budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves increased the amount employers have to pay in NICs by 1.2 per cent, and lowered the wage threshold at which employers must start paying the tax from £9,100 to £5,000.

The government has claimed that it is not raising taxes on working people, but businesses have warned the costs will ultimately have to be shouldered by workers or consumers.

“Higher employer NICs could further strain the labour market by around the turn of the year,” Sanjay Raja, the bank’s chief UK economist said.

“Ultimately, whether its through cutting existing payrolls or trimming hiring plans, the increase to NICs will hit employment/employment growth.”

Much loved tea brand on the brink of collapsing into administration


Typhoo Tea, one of the oldest tea companies in Britain, is close to going bust.


The century-old troubled tea brand has filed a notice to appoint administrators after recording losses of almost £40 million last year.

The brand is not yet in administration. Typhoo bosses filed a notice of intent (NOI) that gives them breathing space from creditors and seek a rescue deal, court documents filed yesterday show.

Dave McNulty, the newly appointed CEO of Typhoo, said the move enables the tea market titan to ‘to pursue a sale of the business’.
