23/1/2021 11:41 | The US must invest and prepare for the threat of what is yet to come On Jan. 1, Congress overrode then-President Donald Trump’s veto of the fiscal 2021 National Defense Authorization Act. Much of the news was about the vote itself, but another important story is the 93 F-35 fighter jets that were included in the bill — 14 more than the Pentagon requested in its budget. Congress recognizes that the F-35 is the cornerstone of deterrence in the great power competition that we face as a country. The 2018 National Defense Strategy acknowledged that “inter-state strategic competition, not terrorism, is now the primary concern in U.S. national security. ... Long- term strategic competitions with China and Russia are the principal priorities for the [Defense] Department, and require both increased and sustained investment, because of the magnitude of the threats they pose to U.S. security and prosperity today, and the potential for those threats to increase in the future.” | ![]() northernhills

19/1/2021 17:18 | Thanks RW. My understanding was that the F35 (or at least the -A) was always intended to be nuclear capable, so presumably if not so already should be on the way - I think test drops of the B61 aerodynamic body have taken place recently? | ![]() shalder
19/1/2021 08:35 | shalder, the german airforce has a commitment to NATO. One of those is a nuclear capability. They currently use Tornado's in both Air Force and Navy roles. Other than that they have a number of Typhoons and F4 Phantoms (which are surely getting on a bit!) Neither Typhoon or F35 are certified as nuclear capable, yet. France is France. | ![]() ribblewader
18/1/2021 21:50 | Looking at who is/isn't getting into the F35,it is interesting that neither Germany nor France are currently going to be in the stealth game until the Euro alternative, which can hardly be in service before the second half of the 2030s, so clearly not a high priority then. Even smaller airforces in the EU are going for stealth. Do Germany and France know something everybody else doesn't, or are they just not up to speed on this? I understand about not putting all your eggs in one basket, and I think the RAF has it right with the Typhoon+F35 mix, but no requirement for stealth for the next 15 years?? | ![]() shalder
