Hylas-1 arrived at Europe's Spaceport

19 October 2010
The Hylas-1 telecommunications satellite has arrived at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. Its next journey will be to space, into its operational geostationary orbit nearly 36 000 km up.

The Antonov An-124 cargo jetliner bringing Hylas-1 from Bangalore, India, touched down at Rochambeau airport near the capital Cayenne late in the evening of Monday 11 October. The satellite was then off-loaded and moved by road to the Guiana Space Centre where it was placed in the S1B satellite preparation facility.

Hylas-1 is now undergoing a final series of health checks before being fuelled, encapsulated within its payload faring, and mated to an Ariane 5 ECA vehicle. The satellite will be launched in late November onboard Ariane flight V198, which will be the fifth of six Ariane 5 launches planned for this year.

This first 'Highly Adaptable Satellite' contains an advanced communications payload allowing it to provide broadband internet access to consumers and businesses across Europe as well as supporting a range of conventional telecommunications applications and services.

While its payload has been developed in Europe, Hylas-1's flight-proven I-2K satellite platform was procured by prime contractor EADS Astrium from Antrix Corporation in India, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The satellite was therefore integrated and tested at ISRO's facility in Bangalore, before being flown more than halfway round the world to French Guiana.

Hylas-1 is an innovative project in more ways than one: this is the first spacecraft to have been developed through a public-private partnership between ESA and a commercial satellite operator. Avanti Communications of London will own and operate the satellite from its geostationary orbital location of 33.5° West.

Moneyweek this week 22/10/10 contained an insert from Red Hot Penny Shares Tom Bulford talking about a "secret share" that will make everyone a fortune which will be revealed if you sign up.
It is quite clear that it is Avanti so RHPS is pushing it now. Only a month to go to lift off in both rocket and share price.

Yes Sco77harris. I added a few more last week on that sudden drop....close to bottom and if one of my other holdings hits a target for me to sell in the very near future if we are still around here I will add a few more.

I was hoping ANGM was going to do that for me but alas no :-(

Looking more like we are going to stay closer to 600p than 900p that I thought we might achieve before launch. Time yet to go higher but now it looks very much like it is going to take the launch to be out of the way without any problems before we head on towards much higher SP

I don't think so, the remote areas aren't getting cabled in at all, due to the expense on a per-user basis. The satellite system essentially spreads the cost of remote access over a greater number of people.

The revenue coming to AVN would be from people who can't otherwise get broadband at the moment.

Others may have different opinions?

Is the arrival of a reliable fully-accessible satellite signal for broadband going to do serious enough damage to some company or other in the cabling field? Or at least be percieved as likely to do so, and thereby demolish somebody's share price?

This si the bit s_s missed from TW's tip...

"...Evaluation

With the launch date of HYLAS 1 now confirmed as 25th November and the announcement of two new contract wins in the last few days, Avanti's satellites project seems to be on track and gaining momentum. This has pushed the shares slightly higher, but I fail to see how, on a Discounted Cash Flow basis, they should trade at anywhere this side of £10. I continue to consider a target of £15-£25 per share (depending on the pricing of forward capacity sales) as realistic and believe further gains are likely down the line as Avanti continues to expand its satellite operations. As such, at up to 750p, the shares remain a clear "buy"."

PRESS RELEASE.

Reaction to Critical Spending Review
20 October, 2010 - 16:00 Reacting to todays CSR announcement by the British government, David Williams, Chief Executive of Avanti Communications said:
"Avanti welcomes the government's recognition that there is still a very large population in the UK without access to reasonable quality broadband. The £530m pencilled in potentially to finance new projects in the next five years obviously goes nowhere near the £30bn cost of fibring all UK homes, but with the imminent arrival of HYLAS 1 and its 10Mb satellite broadband available to every home in the UK, there are now cost effective options available to the consumer."
