01/12/2010 11:22 | I've been saying for a long time it is David Williams that played a large part in my original decision to invest in AVN. | ![]() yorgi
01/12/2010 11:15 | Got to love a CEO who isn't backward in coming forward: 09:52 01Dec10 DJN-DJ INTERVIEW: Avanti Communications Eyes Mobile Operator Sales DJ INTERVIEW: Avanti Communications Eyes Mobile Operator Sales LONDON (Dow Jones)--Broadband-by Group PLC is in talks with mobile phone operators about selling capacity on its HYLAS 1 satellite, which launched Friday, the firm's chief executive said Wednesday. The company is in talks with two major mobile companies, and hopes to announce deals soon, David Williams told Dow Jones Newswires. Avanti's satellite will provide "backhaul" for mobile services, linking base stations in areas that lack fiber optic infrastructure necessary to transmit large amounts of data. This market is better-established in regions such as Africa, which in many areas lack any fixed-line infrastructure. In Europe, however, where HYLAS 1 provides coverage, most regions are connected by copper wires, but remoter areas lack the fiber connections needed to cope with the explosion in demand for data services fuelled by the booming market for smart phones, Williams said. "Satellite has a role to play in providing backhaul," he said. The company is also experiencing strong demand for capacity on HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 2, which is due to launch in spring 2012, from consumer broadband providers, companies needing support for multi-country networks, and the military market, Williams added. Avanti expects to sell out capacity on HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 2 within three years and five years respectively. ENDS | ![]() peetle
01/12/2010 10:22 | Off topic (a bit) but MTG - I do like your thinking thanks - looked at your thread and I see that as exactly the type of stuff that will help things along. | ![]() ib1905
01/12/2010 10:22 | Whoops-there we go! | blue forever
01/12/2010 10:21 | Analysts meeting today at 12 so perhaps may see some positive action later on today or over the next couple of weeks. Personally I`m very happy where we are now and can wait for the inevitable rise in share price | blue forever
01/12/2010 10:19 | Yes I was not expecting that news before the new year M T and yes you may well be right that institutional interest may well move us on before that. As far as I'm concerned the worrying phase is past and in time the share price will perform in our favour I'm quite sure. | ![]() yorgi
01/12/2010 10:13 | yorgi -- that might not be till after Xmas or into January next year. Institutional interest in the stock might shift it before then methinks - along with perhaps a little stakebuilding by interested commercial entities - and wider pi interest triggered by a bigger number of analysts covering it between now and then. | m.t.glass
01/12/2010 10:08 | I guess the next big share price driver will be confirmation that commissioning has been completed and Hylas1 is in operation serving it's customers. I'm sure at that time David Williams will ensure we get plenty of publicity and have the media PR in full swing again | ![]() yorgi
01/12/2010 09:24 | Also, there is a gap, which may or may not get filled. One way or another gaps often cause congestion for a while since some holders automatically sell some on sudden rises. | ![]() horneblower
01/12/2010 09:20 | ib1905 - thanks for that link. I have posted it on the 'Writing to my MP' thread and added it to the header there If everyone puts in a request (an OBE for David Williams, for services to rural industry perhaps?), it will get noticed. And if he gets one, it will focus even more attention on the company. | m.t.glass
01/12/2010 09:07 | johncsimpson - wish I had, but I think Yorgi above has summed it up. Although I was tempted to sell and buy back in yesterday and today, I think that this is a long term hold and if you have the cash top up on dips.Depends on your viewpoint which Smarm and I touched on in posts 1622,1625 and 1627, but what we both agreed on is that this is worth holding for now. | ![]() 2vdm
01/12/2010 09:03 | jc -- through 2009/10 the AVN share price has already trebled in anticipation of last weekend's event and the orders it should bring. It could well be argued that the price more than adequately matches progress, and that the only big move which could/should occur was an almighty plunge if the launch had failed. It might treble again going forward - I am rather hoping it will. But I don't think anyone standing back and watching can be too disapppointed. Except those who only bought in this month and take no account of how big a rise they missed in being late onboard. Like others here I look forward to broker upgrades starting later today ;o) | m.t.glass
01/12/2010 08:55 | (1932) - Very good 2vdm. Do you have a similar yarn as to why AVN after a successful launch, two contract wins and a good RNS re results are going backwards (well at least not forwards). Although I've been buying into this share since July (so I'm well up) I really expected much more after Hylas1 - not complaining but the markets are sometimes unfathomable. added: I think you're right yorgi. | ![]() johncsimpson
01/12/2010 08:53 | I think you can ignore the share price at the moment the market in general is depressing or holding back the share price of lots of sound companies at the moment and AVN is no exception. All is going to plan the contracts wins are being made and announced and in time the share price will reflect this. Its always good to see a rising share price but the most important factor is that AVN is delivering. | ![]() yorgi

01/12/2010 08:38 | hopefully this might bring a smile today.... It is a slow day in a damp little Irish town. The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit. - On this particular day a rich German tourist is driving through the town, stops at the local hotel and lays a 100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. - The owner gives him some keys and, as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs, the hotelier grabs the 100 note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. - The butcher takes the 100 note and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. - The pig farmer takes the 100 note and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed and fuel. - The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the 100 note and runs to pay his drinks bill at the pub. - The publican slips the money along to the local hooker drinking at the bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him "services" on credit. - The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner with the 100 note. - The hotel proprietor then places the 100 note back on the counter so the rich traveller will not suspect anything. - At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, picks up the 100 note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town. - No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looking to the future with a lot more optimism. - And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how the bailout package works! | ![]() 2vdm

01/12/2010 08:32 | Writing in The Daily Telegraph in October last year, the Prince of Wales warned that isolated rural communities had an "immense handicap" because of a lack of access to broadband services. Bearing in mind that he owns large chunks of Cornwall, which BT and Avanti are targeting in their deal, can we expect His Royal Hy-ness to put a gleeful reference to Avanti's satellite service in his next speech on the subject? Who knows - if he's excited enough by it, he might even give his mum a nudge in the direction of making David Williams a Sir - for his contribution to assisting businesses in rural areas. Or an OBE at least. | m.t.glass
01/12/2010 08:31 | I like the old adage that "the market always gets the correct price for assets, just not always at the right time". There's bound to be some too-ing and fro-ing after a major event like the launch. If these contracts continue to come in (and I'm sure they will) the price will find its level. I just wish I could top up. | ![]() peetle
01/12/2010 08:25 | Thank you Peetle. Little things please little minds and that pic cheered me after seeing the reacation of the share price over the last couple of days. NOT what I had expected at all. ;-( | ![]() share_shark
01/12/2010 08:22 | Share_shark, here's the picture you're after I think: And the text: On Friday, November 26, Arianespace orbited two communications satellites: HYLAS 1 for the European operator Avanti Communications, and INTELSAT 17 for the international satellite operator Intelsat. This picture shows Ariane 5's initial climb-out from the ELA 3 launch zone at Europe's Spaceport, which is located adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean coastline in French Guiana. It was the 54th Ariane 5 launch and 40th success in a row. The launch took place at 15:39 local time (18:39 GMT, 19:39 CET) and the rocket released its two payloads into their planned orbits. Owned and operated by Avanti Communications plc of the UK, the Hylas-1 communication satellite will demonstrate advanced high-speed technologies and provide innovative broadband services across Europe. The Hylas-1 payload constituents were developed by EADS Astrium in the framework of ESA's Advanced Research in Telecommunication Systems (ARTES) programme, through funding essentially from the UK Space Agency. | ![]() peetle
01/12/2010 08:22 | its all been said great. However the external factors that are affecting the market in general are going to hold the share price back for the time being it would seem | ![]() yorgi
01/12/2010 08:20 | Not quite the market reaction I was expecting - another contract win, a VERY positive RNS and better than expected results - strange!! | ![]() greyseal
01/12/2010 08:20 | All this good news and the riggers mark down the price. No doubt it will rise when the pigs have been fed. | ![]() cestnous |
