2 FTSE 100 shares I’d buy right now: Kevin Godbold - Yahoo Finance 01/02/23

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m optimistic about the prospects for several FTSE 100 shares right now. And if I wasn’t already fully invested, would research some with the idea of holding for the long term.
For example, I like the look of Ashstead (LSE: AHT), the equipment rental company.
In December 2022, the firm released the half-year results report covering the period to 31 October. And the directors said the business had seen “ongoing momentum in robust end markets”. Indeed, revenue rose by 26% year on year. And adjusted earnings per share shot up by 32%.
NAI: For infomation only, FTSE is currently at an all time high, and AHT has already bagged some considerable gains in recent days DYOR
Good day disc0
I'm not sure if 'bad' data is still 'good' or whether 'good' is back to being 'good'.
Neither am I sure if the US markets are bothered. Following Mr Powell's Dove impersonation that's all that matters.
US non farm payrolls 1:30pm (forecast 180k) and unemployment rate (forecast is marginal rise from 3.5% to 3.6%).Guess any pullback or not will be predicated by the above data.
Hi DD,
I think both here and in the US, rates have moved as predicted and the watchword seems to be 'no drama'... how long will it last?
The Baltic Dry Index has dropped 46.56% over one month and 52.92% over a year..the biggest plunge in decades
This BDI is an index of average prices paid for the transport of dry bulk materials, and often viewed as a leading indicator of economic activity.... more on investopedia
Mr Powell came good for the markets yesterday. He started his comments hawkish and then became dovish which the markets loved.
AHT share price has broken up out of the ascending wedge and is close to the target I mentioned previously of 5554. It will be seen on the chart that there are three resistances to overcome; 5554, the upper parallel of the pitchfork and the top of the main channel.
EDIT
Remiss of me failing to mention another gap at 5360.
Good day fenners
Heard on the radio this morning large demand for summer holidays abroad. Which suggests people have got the money to spend or are taking the view they 'need' a holiday to get away from the UK even if only for a couple of weeks and will pay it off over the following months.
As ever the media prefers bad news to good news.
A good standard procedure.
The opposition to the govt. (the BBC) has been calling recession for months and months. When the data comes out as we are officially not in recession they say that we "really" are and any uplift due to the world cup can be ignored.
They and other media started the "cost of living crisis" reporting even noticed a BBC news page set aside for it. Making it as prominent as the war in the Ukraine... like they haven't got a real crisis.
Now we know that wholesale gas prices are supposed to be half what they were pre winter and the cost to the consumer may not be so bad , do they trumpet that ? No. They are still trying to talk the country into recession.
However there is as full employment as you can get. Anyone who is prepared to find a job , should find one.
That means that partners could get jobs or people could get second jobs , offsetting higher costs with greater income.
Which brings us to the evidence of our own eyes. Out of town shopping full. In a recession you would see far less people shopping. House prices rose last year and I suspect will level off this year. Holiday bookings massively up.
All these economic activities keep the speed of money supply going and may prevent a recession entirely.
But does that "good news " fit the media agenda ?
Its all about confidence and there seems to be more of that than the BBC would have us believe.
I read quite a few opinions and analysis from a variety of authors. Some are suggesting a largish fall, some a largish rise. What attracted me to the article by Jeremy Grantham was his record which is a good one. Whether he will be correct this time we will have to wait and see. He is suggesting the US market low may not come until 2024. I did think some of the charts were very compelling.
My understanding is the UK recession will be a soft landing but it will run longer than previously thought. The Treasury needs to fill its coffers to pay back the borrowing.
"Why unlikely?, don’t understand why you think they would react differently."
==============================================================================
Because they rarely do. I'ts not unusual following a data release for the futures to show little reaction. The Cash market opens and bang! the move occurs.
If you look at the 15 minute charts of S&P 500, DOW 30 and NAS 100 which includes the futures prices, you will see the Futures price action was virtually a straight line from the Cash close on 26th to the Cash open on 27th. Immediately on opening all three moved up quickly.
Why no Futures reaction to data release? I don't know the exact answer to that. Maybe it's because there are not many traders at their desks, maybe Futures traders are uncertain, maybe until trading volume increases with the Cash market there is a lack of direction. The point I was making was that just because the futures do not react to data releases don't assume the Cash market will do the same.
This is an interesting article. You may not agree with all of it or even any of it but it is well worth a read.
