25/3/2015 08:32 | Ah yes, dear old Jack. He would have been kicking himself for not bidding a bit more for Lookers. His buy timing was good, as was his wish to buy out all other share holders. If only he'd offered a bit more ..... It wasn't long before Lookers' share price rose nicely and exceeded the price of Jack's would-be takeover. That's all with the benefit of hindsight, of course. The other issue with the sector is its history of using borrowed funds to buy out independents, regardless of the time of the cycle. But, maybe they've learned the lesson this time round? In fairness, again it's easy to be clever with hindsight. | ed 123
25/3/2015 08:19 | I thought it was possibly the top when Jack Petchey sold out a couple of years ago. | essentialinvestor
25/3/2015 08:06 | Thanks for those comments, EssentialInvestor. Appreciated. :-) | ed 123
25/3/2015 07:56 | Ed FWIW LOOK to me looks reasonable value, certainly on a PER basis it appears cheap. That does come with a proviso which is the cyclical nature of the sector, so if you think we are mid cycle rather than late cycle it's a buy imv. Dividends could be a tad more generous. It does get hit on wider market falls, so that also needs to be factored it. enviro tends to be highly astute on small caps so I would probably defer to his view if he sees it differently. | essentialinvestor
18/3/2015 23:32 | Thanks, envirovision. :-) It was the term, "cable" that I didn't understand. Thinking about today's trading in LOOK. Sterling's been falling against the Euro for about one week - no sudden change today. The share prices of the other car retailers held up well today. Someone was determined to sell Lookers shares in the closing auction - 123,000 shares at 145.75p or about 6p below the previous trade. Why would someone do that? Wondering if Tony Bramall's sell unnerved someone? | ed 123
18/3/2015 23:16 | The currency, all this stuff is either imported or relies on margins tacked to foreign countries. We may make and help supply it all but we don't make our own produce these days. This gives salesmen less head space to strike deals and leaves dealers a squeeze to run ever enticing sales initiatives, an efficient market should always be two steps ahead. In case you had not noticed dealers were getting more slack than seen in more than 15 years thanks to strong cable. | envirovision
18/3/2015 22:58 | "lower cable" What's that? | ed 123
18/3/2015 22:35 | lower cable = lower profit for lookers. | envirovision
18/3/2015 19:45 | Hmmm... snap down on no significant volume; results were good; prospects are good; company fundamentals are fine; fwd PE 11ish. I think tree shake or bot attack. I'm going to loosen my stop a bit and wait for the bounce back. | markd4
18/3/2015 18:20 | Anyone know why the big drop today ?? | andrewgizmo
12/3/2015 21:42 | big volume here today, lots of companies leave fste250 as have been taken over in the next few months a chance of entry. | rolo7
06/3/2015 12:07 | You're welcome. :-) | ed 123
06/3/2015 11:41 | Ed - thanks, they were not on Digital Look this morning. | bigbertie
06/3/2015 10:46 | bigbertie From 4 March, in response to finals, Numis: 'Buy' target 185p. Panmure Gordon: 'Buy' target 175p. Fwiw, I'd also prefer a bigger dividend. Other concern is that they might go for a big acquisition. | ed 123
06/3/2015 10:27 | That's better - perhaps some funds have had their reviews and are buying a few! I don't see any new broker comment yet though. | bigbertie |
