Used to make a fair amount of profit out of shares trading within a channel like this one. With the FTSE itself possibly going to be range trading, there might be more opportunities like KEL coming up. Best of luck.

It will for sure go into FTSE 100.Currently 87

If a company achieves 90th or above it is automatically in and the lowest FTSE 100 is booted out.

IF a current FTSE 100 comapny falls to 111th or below it is automatically botted out and the highest place non FTSE 100 goes in whether it has achieved 90th or not.

BAY and GKN are currently auto out and so even if KEL falls to 92 or 93 or so it will definitely get in to replace BAY most likely .

There are 2 or 3 other non FTSE 100 being CW. / Foreign & Colonial and Provident Financial between 92 and 97 places who are the onyl ones that could stuff KEL but it just won;t happen. Even if they suddenly overtook there is SDR at 108 and HAYS at 109 who could equally be ejected to create a few more places.

In summary its into FTSE 100 and it is in the price . I would sell soon as once in I tihnk it will fall

Hi

What are the rules for submission into the FTSE 100. I notice Kelda Group is currently listed as being in the FTSE 250/350, yet in terms of market cap, its about the 90th largest company.

If it carries on at this rate, it should get into the FTSE100 in a month or so.

Hi

'bank a profit coz you can always buy back in again later'

Don't think everyone would agree with that statement. Part of investing is minimizing the transaction costs, which doing the above certainly wouldn't help with. There's also a chance you won't be able to get back in lower than you sold. Kelda is a stable company, with stable revenues and a fairly stable dividend. In a perfect world, every company would be like this, why on earth would you want to sell it ?. As long as OFWAT don't poke their nose in and do something silly, I plan on holding for the long term.

With the cut today of interest rate the yield of over 6pc must be supportive to Kelda in this market

Stable - there appears to be a strong groundswell of support at between 360p and 370p, so in the short-term, despite their "defensive" qualities, with the Footsie still falling, I predict more short-term downside that upside.

I agree that it is wise to take profits especialy in this market, but I am going to hold Kelda in the short term as I believe its yield plus its large holding in waste recycling will limit its downside against most of the rest of this market.

Water and other utility shares have done rather well against the falling markets, but I just wonder if the time has come to either "top-slice" some profits or even consider selling outright.

Certainly can't fault the company for looking overseas to gain new "unregulated" water and sewerage businesses but if the Gulf War kicks off, my guess is that the City fund managers will want to "lock-in" profits and will sell KELDA and other water shares.

As a former private client stockbroker, my philosophy has always been to "bank a profit coz you can always buy back in again later"

Any views ????

Tony

Tell me about it. The most popular thread on this board seems to be Just Group. Unfortunatly, new to sharedealing in '99 I bought these with all the ramping that was going on. Lost my whole investment. You win some, you loose some I guess. No more penny share investments for me though.

LONDON (AFX) - Water UK, the industry association that represents all UK
water and wastewater service suppliers, has welcomed proposals for changes to
the industry made in the Queen's speech.
Included in the proposals are plans for the director general of Water
Services to be replaced with a regulatory board under a new bill to be
introduced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and
for an independent Consumer Council to be set up "to represent and pursue the
interests of consumers and customers".
"We're pleased that the government has decided to take a move forward. We'll
be working with the government and stakeholders to make sure that the bill
delivers a sustainable approach to managing the water environment," a
spokeswoman for the organisation told AFX News.
"We've been working hard to ensure that the bill takes into account all
aspects, and benefits the environment as well as society by taking a long-term
view," she added.
DEFRA said the bill will "extend the opportunities for competition in the
supply of water for large non-household users".
Companies will be encouraged to conserve more water under the legislation
through a reform of the abstraction licensing system, which grants licences to
companies and individuals taking a water supply independently from rivers or
elsewhere.
This will result in a simplification of the licence application process and
set a threshold so that many smaller abstractors would no longer need a licence
"while removing most of the existing exemptions which are based on the type of
use of water", the department said.

The price would have to appreciate considerably before it got into the FTSE it is currently at 105th in the FTSE 350.
I hold this stock and the beauty is that there is a safety net because the safe (I hope) dividend gives a good yield. Companies paying decent dividends do not tend to fall too far. Whereas some tech companies who pay very small dividends or none at all have no safety net. Hence when some bad news come out they go into free fall.

Andy46,

A good rule of thumb when investing, besides the more mainstream ones, is to steer clear of shares where there is high activity on the discussion board, it almost always gaurantees that the stock is in trouble. I have also noticed that the better quality the poster to the discussion, generally the better quality the stock. Trust me here talks the voice of bitter experience, but I can't complain. Hard lessons have been well learnt.

As to Kelda, missed opportunity this AM, but hoping for 365-368 for an entry and a bounce. Still believe the market is only for traders at the moment. They're calm, it's the long termers with the bitten fingernails IMO.

Hi

Glad to know their are others following this share. Going by the rest of the posts made on ADVFN it seems most people are happy following shares in companies with a high chance of collapsing completely. Strange, but true.

An article I read today suggested Yorkshire Water will be able to raise water bills by £12 between April next year and 2005. Good news for shareholders, not so good for the person paying the household bills.
