15/8/2010 15:50 | It appears that even though Unite is doing it's best to bring down BA, the business is improving - not only for passenger traffic, but also cargo. BA are recalling mothballed planes back into service to cope with increased demand. VT | venture traveller

15/8/2010 10:30 | FTLex: "Why would anyone in Britain book a holiday these days? Snowstorms, ash plumes and striking British Airways cabin crew have made 2010 a miserable year to fly in and out of the UK. Now another strike could force BAA, which runs most of the country's main airports including London's Heathrow, to shut them down during a big holiday week. The disasters are starting to feed on themselves. BAA, owned by Spanish infrastructure company Ferrovial, says it can't give staff more than a 1.5 per cent pay rise because it's been such a difficult year". | alphorn

"Fewer than half of those people eligible to vote have done so and we do not believe this result provides a clear mandate for strike action." The union said 74.1% of the 3,054 staff who voted said yes to strike action. The turnout was about 50% of the 6,185 staff balloted. | anony mous

10/8/2010 21:52 | twisted ! AUGUST 9, 2010, 12:12 PM GMT THE WSJ Is BASSA an Unruly Child for Unite in British Airways Row? The issue of uncontrollable children and flying has been a topic of conversation recentlyhow they can be a cause of irritation but they can also be a obstacle to getting things done efficiently. I wonder if British Airlines Stewards and Stewardesses Association (BASSA), the arm of union Unite that's dedicated to BA cabin crew, is proving to be Unite's unruly child, in need of permanent time out in the "naughty chair." BA recently asked cabin crew to close the blinds of every window as part of their normal routine. To explain: if the plane is being parked overnight and it's rather hot outside, closing the shutters helps keep the aircraft a little cooler and saves on air-conditioning costs. Hardly a huge demand that'll break your back. However a BASSA posting titled "Closing Window Blinds at the End of Your Flight" on August 2 (now taken down) shows how BASSA are perhaps proving quite the hindrance to resolving a dispute between BA and it's cabin crew. BASSA posting: "It has been brought to our attention that crew are being asked to close all the window blinds at the end of each flight. This has not been agreed with BASSA and no safe working practice has been trialled. The normal practice when anything new is introduced is that the Health, Safety and Welfare committee would carry out a risk assessment to confirm that everything is safe. Please note that no provision has been put in place for this extra duty and therefore you should not be carrying it out. If we do this it will become normal working practice and you will then become obliged to do it and then what next - pick up all the litter? Please politely refuse if you are asked to do this at the end of your flight." The posting forced Unite's Joint General Secretaries Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley to warn cabin crew that the posting could be seen as a call to take industrial action and called on them to ignore the posting and instead do as instructed. Cleaning up BASSA's mess, Unite was forced to remind cabin crew: "If you are dismissed while taking unofficial industrial action, you will have no right to complain of unfair dismissal. If you fail to work normally, you will be taking part in unofficial action." It's things like this that may explain why the smallest of issues can become the biggest of mountains to climb and why resolving this dispute is progressing at a snail's speed. | anony mous
10/8/2010 11:45 | There is no reason why these militants should be allowed to continue in their effortS to damage BA. If members of BASSA and UNITE dont like BA they should leave the company. | selborne_edge
