WARSAW--Activity in Poland's manufacturing sector decelerated sharply in April, posting only modest growth, Markit Economics said Monday.

A survey of 300 industrial companies showed that the manufacturing purchasing managers' index was at 51.0 in April compared with 53.8 in March.

A PMI figure below 50 indicates a contraction in activity; above that level signals expansion.

Growth rates for output, new orders and employment all slowed sharply from March's reading, Markit said.

"A marginal rise in new orders suggests that overall conditions in the sector will remain subdued in May," said Trevor Balchin, senior economist at Markit.
