I am an active investor and l look out for recovery plays and long established companies. Not all my investments pay dividends as l might favor capitals gains in recovery plays. I only look to the FTSE100 and FTSE250 for my picks as the risk of losing all your money is lower. That means no fledging, small caps and absolutely no AIM stocks (it’s a real punters market).

I tend to build positions in stocks in blocks (or sometimes l say slices). So for example l may set aside 50% of 10% cash on a stock and increase the holding as the share price drops (volatility of the stock determines the price). If the share price moves up beyond break even l abandon building the stock and look to new stocks or add to weakening positions until l have exhausted my budget. I aim to make a modest 10% return on the portfolio and my current average yearly return to date is 15.6% since 2008 outside my ISA (which I’m trading less over the years) and 8.37% inside my ISA since 2009 (which I’m trading more over the years). I tend to hold stocks for months, take dividends and exit profit positions by year end. I may carry over loss positions over to the next financial year, take minor hits to reduce CGT or if possible exit a portfolio if in profit overall. I have yet to record a YoY loss using this strategy. My returns are slow but steady. Last updated 03/10/2017.
