Youngs have very low levels of net debt, at least for this sector,
helpful at this time.

Doubt JDW trading will be near 2019 pre COVID levels later this year.

Nearly 400 Wetherspoons workers resign as chain gears up for reopening

A nationwide pub chain has announced that nearly 400 of its staff are resigning ahead of venues reopening in July.

JD Wetherspoon, which owns 875 pubs in the UK, has not confirmed whether the mass resignations are connected to the backlash it saw against its response to the UK’s lockdown earlier this year.

Following the government’s announcement that pubs will reopen on July 4, the company trended online with the hashtag “Neverspoons”, with many saying they would no longer frequent the chain due to its responses to coronavirus.

The 388 resignations come after the chain’s boss, Tim Martin, announced in March that more than 40,000 workers would remain unpaid until the company received its government grant.

He also sent an email to the pub’s suppliers, saying that no invoices would be paid until the chain reopened.

In today’s statement, the company confirmed that it has been approved for a £48.3m loan through the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption scheme.

Wetherspoons said: “Following a share placing in April 2020, from which the company raised a total of approximately £141m before fees, a group of the company’s lending banks has approved a further £48.3 million loan through the CLBIS.

“The company’s pubs in England are due to reopen on 4 July 2020, in line with the government’s guidance.

“Following consultation with employees, resulting in over 3,000 suggestions, the company has created the ‘Wetherspoon COVID-19 Secure Operating Plan’, which sets out how we intend to safely operate pubs when we reopen.”

Wetherspoon confirms £48m Covid loan ahead of July 4 reopening

Pub group JD Wetherspoon confirmed it had secured a £48.3m loan under the government’s coronavirus loan scheme as it prepared to open 750 pubs on July 4.

The company on Wednesday said it had created a 'Wetherspoon Covid-19 Secure Operating Plan' after the government announced a further easing of lockdown measures.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday said that venues such as pubs, restaurants and cafes could reopen so long as they offered table service and keep details of guests who could be traced in the event of an infection.

Wetherspoons said it did not currently intend to start any new pub development projects in the next 12 months. A small number of projects that were "on site" when pubs closed would be completed in due course, it added.

The company conducted a staff survey, receiving 36,004 (82%) responses. It revealed 35,616 have said they intend to return to work, although 4,090 could not return immediately, for family, caring or health reasons.

It added that 79 have tested positive for Covid-19, of which 74 have said they have recovered, and five have said that they were still unwell, another 834 suspected they had Covid-19, not confirmed by a test, of which 780 have said they had recovered and 54 said that they were still unwell. Two staff died at the end of April, having tested positive for the virus.

So if pubs are taking customer details does that mean if you are in a pub and a customer who was in at the same time has coronavirus you will be contacted and ask to self isolate for 2 weeks?

Not saying its wrong but with many people only just getting back to "normal"could put a lot of people off.

Table service only huge advantage over the competition for Spoons as they already have a well tried app that works very well for food and drink.

couple of areas to factor in with JDW :

The REV's reports are currently being written up by all venues in this sector.

Our local pub (an independent)have had there capacity slashed on re-opening from 280 to a mere 24 people under the 2 meter rule, this will double should we move to 1 meter rule.

I did our rugby clubs REV's report last week, our capacity has been reduced from 130 to a mere 12 people (2 meter) and 24 (1 meter).

JDW buy real ale with short left span from brewers, this "cheap" ale will not be available to purchase on re-opening, as there's be little to no brewing therefore nothing to buy on the cheap with a short life span.

JDW's margins are so tight and couple that with the negativity early in lockdown with JDW having issues over furlough - all points to the negative for me.

I read that can't see it happening though more practical to simply limit numbers imo.

I think people tend to look at the here and now rather than 12- 18 months ahead.

3 months ago we were on "fullish" lockdown with the streets deserted and nearly everywhere closed.

Now 3 months later deaths are down to near normal levels in many areas and new cases are falling nearly every day, traffic is near normal most shops are open and pubs and hotels are likely to open in 2 weeks all be it with restrictions.

All that in 3 months so unless it all goes badly pear shaped again which has not happened in any country yet, find it hard to believe things will not be very close to normal in a year or less.Personally I think it will be more like 3-4 months.

Its not going to be plain sailing is it lots of hurdles to overcome but I think in time normality will return. In many parts of Europe the social distancing rules have been considerably relaxed and they are returning to some form of normality this is likely to happen here too as the threat reduces.

Its just a question of when rather than if imo.
