Nortic,You seem to assume a lot, never said JD was good value, just that you can't compare SPD with JD. Their PE is not 30 and never said I agreed with Canaccords forecast. You seem to be asking for opinions and then when you don't like the answer you get all touchy - You can drop the "old boy" remark as well.DD

All in the price. This Ashley bashing is boring . They could go as low a 250 short term and then bounce to 380 . You said Cannacord had them on a p/e of 18 to 20 (which you took with a pitch of salt) any you claimed that wasn't cheap. JD on p/e of 30 and offers great value ( in your view) and you question my logic ???We'll agree to disagree old boy.

MP's will make an example of JD's just like they have at SPD and then the press will start. No one is immune .

I hope JD keeps going up because of SPD stake but MA ( billionaire ) is no mug. I think you said 270 target so your about bang on. But as far a risk reward goes you've answered my question with your target . SPD offers more upside.

Think I had 280 for SPD but as posted previously, haven't a clue anymore, is this going to stick to its winning formula or throw the baby out with the bath water and diversify into property/forex dealing/share dealing/high end retailing?.As for JD, haven't looked.DD

TerminatedUnderlying business was declining way before Brexit. Don't disagree that falling sterling has hit their costs, margins and profits but errrmmm........what would you have done if you were allegedly a retail genius prior to the vote?.The underlying profits declined by 8% for year end April 2016 with increased revenues of 2.5% when compared to the previous year. Brexit had sweet FA to do with these numbers. Revenue is vanity and profit is sanity - this is valued on earnings not revenue.DD

I agree Careful. I doesn't say much about the world but a lot of people would step over a man lying in the street these days ( non of us I know) so when I here about working condition and how everyone is taken the morale high ground it make me laugh. Price is everything these days to a lot of people. Interest rates going up in U.K. should help pound recover plus good Christmas sales. Rich or poor people will always shop there. Fact.

Mail on Sunday is for entertainment, not news.
It sells about 2m copies pw.
No doubt not too closely read.
Insignificant influence I would guess.

Thanks for the Mail on Sunday article...interesting quote at the end to say that on evidence received the conditions etc.at JD Sports are far worse than that at SPD.

Discodave: Revenue has increased showing a good underlying busunrss and profits have fallen due to heavy currency fluctuations caused by brexit, which has put margin under pressure. Do you see if differently, if so I'd be interested to here your perspective.

One man in the spotlight because he's a self made man ( easy target) and then you've got a board that runs a company under the spotlight. No one is squeaky clean. Don't kid yourself guys.

One would think that are a large number of "long-term greats" nearer the Bahamas than SPD. Still, a positive write up even though value investing is out of favour.

If you go on Canaccords forecasts this is on a PE of 18 to 20, so not cheap. Can throw numbers around until we're blue in the face, nobody can predict what the future holds, you believe this is good value at the moment and I don't, not based on the underlying business anyway. Hope your right and I'm wrong, that way you lose nothing and all I lose is a bit of face - can handle that, plenty more fish in the sea and nobody gets them right all the time.As for JD and their warehouse issues, they will handle it completely differently to SPD and in a few months time it will all be forgotten (IMO). Just look at the share price action on the day the news broke.GLDD

None of this is great. But it is baked into a share price that has halved this year and values the company at a measly nine times the five-year average of its earnings per share. Indeed, even if earnings were to halve, the company would still trade at a substantial discount to its peer group. Mr Ashley is unlikely ever to embody the spirit of Christmas. But he still knows how to flog trainers.FT lex

Hi DDAgree on some points and disagree on others .I found the Lex article interesting the other day. I was surprised and the end of the piece that there was some quite bullish undertones which I would never expect from the FT about MA. But let's not be fooled JD Sports will be dragged up in front of MP's and be lambasted . Even though people go on about governance issue at SPD, JD Sports will be made an example of.They, the management are in charge and will be held to account .As I have said before the customers are not a sophisticated bunch and are only interested in price. If you chose not to shop on moral ground you'd end up shopping nowhere.Think about your shopping habits. None of these people are squeaky clean and they'll all be found out because those MP's who claim for papers clips will demand it.

NorticInteresting, just don't see this doubling in the medium term, perhaps 5 years or so but then it is all about being patient I suppose. This has no clear business strategy anymore or focus, too many inter-family transactions as well - MA's daughters and their boyfriends, his ex wife, his brother/s.........the list no doubt is more, these are just the ones we know about. MA has never court favour with the market and now it's the market that is sticking two fingers up at MA - who is losing, MA, but he seems determined to dig his heels in and possibly ruin what is s good business - aka Ratner.Yes on net assets it's trading at a discount, overall though this is a punt nothing more IMO.DD
