Ryanair accused in TV documentary

13 February 2006

thisismoney website

LOW-COST airline Ryanair is accused of security lapses, dirty aircraft and using exhausted crew members in a TV documentary screened tonight.

Two reporters posing as cabin crew spent five months secretly filming the Irish airline's training programme and flights for the Channel 4 Dispatches programme.

The programme claims passport checks prior to boarding were not carried out properly, trainee staff were not given the required on-board training and planes were not properly cleaned between flights.

The airline is also accused of making cabin crew and pilots work excessive hours. One pilot alleges that he feared being sacked if he refused to fly after complaining about being tired.

Last week Ryanair published on its website the entire exchange of correspondence between the airline and the Channel 4 Dispatches documentary programme.

Ryanair said the Dispatches team had first raised 'a series of allegations' with Ryanair on January 12 this year.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary said: 'Ryanair can find no substance in any of the allegations in the letters received from Dispatches' production company.

'We have replied to all allegations made and have copied all of this correspondence at every stage to the relevant aviation regulatory authorities in the UK and Ireland and they have also confirmed that they can find no substance to any of these written allegations on the basis of the evidence thus far produced by Dispatches.'

He went on: 'If there are any examples of isolated breaches of Ryanair's own policies and procedures presented in the programme, then these naturally will be the subject of a full investigation by Ryanair and any such investigation will be conducted in co-operation with both the Irish and the UK aviation regulatory authorities.'

Cambium.. yes they did.

And why. ??? From memory I think they said on valuation. Bless 'em.

Could they possibly be trading this one as well. ??

Value... earnings below forecasts.. unhedged on fuel after this fiscal year i believe.

Do Citi know where the price of fuel is going.. or the Dollar.

Michael O'Leary is impressive and probably more associated with his company than any other c.e. around. He's built the company from a loss making airline running a single flight about twenty years ago into the most efficient airline in the world and thats including Southwest in the US.

There's pros and cons and Southwest have better fuel hedging but have had to compete with Chapter 11 airlines.

I've traded this quite a bit over the years and had a bias towards the short side but I'll leave it alone now as Ryanair have convinced me that the Warren Buffett philosophy about doing a favour to capitalism by shooting the Wright Brothers all them years ago doesn't apply in this case.
If you cut out the fat you can make serious money in the airline business. The more you expand the lower the costs and the higher the barrier for the competion.

If crude oil stays below $60 I think they'll do well and a drop to the region of $50 and dare I say it but even below that and this share price will move up a bit sharpish.

It's looking like it wants to test the highs just before the profit warning in early 2004 and I never thought that would happen. If it breaks that it's blue sky above.

Watched Mr O'leary on the TV this morning, the man is a genius,i know he is Irish and probably would not accept any UK honours but really what he and his airline has achieved for the ordinary man/woman that wants to fly around Europe is incredible.Could The Pope not make him a Saint or something?
I use Ryanair on a regular basis, and have done since 1998 and really believe that it is the best way to get around Europe, the whole service is just brilliant from start to finish, and the prices are just unbelievable.
Please Mr o'leary keep up the brilliant work you are doing.

Up she goes. Could be a real breakout this time.

Oil below $60.oo.

As before, it looks expensive to me but I won't fight the chart this time round.

Results next week and might take a position ahead of that.

Irish Independant on Sat. 29th OCT.

Ryanair made Euro 39m in last financial year in taxes and charges on passengers who didn't fly.

Been coiling up for so long that the break to the upside should have been explosive from a text book point of view and probably would have but.... above it was the 700 level which is a nice round number for the bears to defend and also it coincides with the level in early 2004 when the profit warning resulted in a drop of about 30%.

Also the breakout (or false breakout) not confirmed by volume.

Now dropping back into the triangle and a few days there might lead a few bulls to throw in the towel and take some good profits.

p.s. the whole market has got the jitters the last few weeks so on the whole Ryanair has done well and probably helped by the Easyjet rumour mill.

Interesting chart.
It's been coiling up for the last few months and the previous trend suggests when it breaks it'll be to the upside.

Growth in passengers but yields are suffering.

More planes. ??? Who's paying for them. Everyone's skint.

Technically the chart looks like it wants to break out to the upside.

Ryanair are not the sort of company to hold the moral high ground. If they pulled a flight out of Newquay it's because they couldn't make enough out of it. The surcharge gives them a reason to blame someone else.

I'm 100% in favour of Ryanair's decision to cut flights at Newquay airport due to the council imposing a £5 surcharge on passengers. It is short-sighted economics by the council but is unfortunately the narrow-minded way that local politicians think.

Hectorp. Yes, adding to shorts at the right time. I couldn't hold an airline long overnight, i'd never get any sleep.

do you mean you are adding to your short position at the right time ?

Good results and the price is up but I'm staying short and adding at the right time. Looks like they accepted the high oil price and hedged a bit more but at a much higher price.

Unhedged for August.
90% for September at $57.
90% for October '05 through to March '06 at $49.

They previously were hedged for the winter period at $47 Brent for 75% of needs.

I couldn't see in todays statement if the oil was Brent or WTI but there's only a dollar or two difference so no point in trying to split hairs.
