26/8/2008 21:02 | More likely to be a contract win imo. Looking at the growth rate and the benefit they are likely to get from the recent acquisition (cash buy so no dilution) they do look like the forecasts are pretty modest, from my brief look today. Considering they are in the defence sector where the recession shouldn't bite and the Russians are highten attention of this type of stock with their muscle flexing then they look an interesting hold to me. A PE for next year of 13 and they look like they could be ahead of forecasts. I bought as a short term trade on the breakout - think I might hold a little while tho as a breakout and that PE look interesting and perhaps there is some news on the way. CR | cockneyrebel

15/7/2008 18:30 | wad collector You are not alone. Anyone with a diverse porfolio must be suffering in at least some areas. Defence does seem reasonably defensive at present. BA. is holding up quite well despit having the US investigation of the 20+ year old contracts being investigated. z | zeppo

15/7/2008 12:56 | Doubts over defence contract Fresh doubts arose today about the multi-billion pound defence training contract won by South Wales in a contest which threatened the future of RAF Cosford. For the first time, the Government has admitted that the contract won by the Metrix consortium for a new defence academy at RAF St Athan might not be affordable and could fall foul of the credit crunch. Despite the contract being awarded last year, armed forces minister Bob Ainsworth has admitted that the Ministry of Defence has not yet entered into a contract with Metrix for the delivery of defence training. Hmm , not the news we want to hear. | wad collector

It is well placed to grow faster than many of its defence peers as it specialises in high-tech solutions to tricky military and security problems. The US operation has sales topping £1bn and organic profit growth of 18%. Growth is expected to accelerate and the order book is up 11% at 5.7bn. Buy. | wad collector

04/6/2008 11:11 | Just noticed tipped in Telegraph last week. Here is Evening Standard article. Jet skis and robots help QinetiQ US growth Bill Condie, Evening Standard 28 May 2008, 1:01pm Defense equipment developer QinetiQ, known for its James Bond-style gadgets, is booming in the US, having added an unmanned jet ski to its range of bomb-disposal and reconnaissance robots. Graham Love: QinetiQ chief executive says US sales are up by 17.5% The company now has more than 2000 robots in combat situations round the world, having sold 800 in the past year. QinetiQ, formerly the Ministry of Defence technology arm, said the jet ski, named Sentry, will provide military and civilian users with a fast, cost-effective and efficient inshore vessel for reconnaissance and security roles. The craft can be operated from a laptop fromup to 16 nautical miles away. Chief executive Graham Love said sales soared 17.5% in North America as its targeting of the homeland security market paid off, with sales of robots and listening equipment surging strongly. 'The North American business is really powering ahead and we are now the leading provider of military robots in the world,' Love added. He believes the next important technology for the company will be its Zephyr high-altitude unmanned air vehicle (UAV), a solar-powered carbon-fibre aircraft that can stay aloft for more than 50 hours, providing a platform for surveillance and communications. Other big sellers include the EARS listening device that can detect and lock on to sniper fire, tracking bullets to their origin. The current wave of conflicts involving the US has driven the company's revenue up almost 19% to £1.37bn compared with last year. It now has sales in the US of more than $1bn (£505m). Net profit fell to £51.4m from £89.3m last year as a result of restructuring charges that will see 320 jobs go by the first quarter of the new financial year. Organic revenue growth in the UK was almost 5% despite uncertain times for defence spending. QinetiQ has established three new businesses in Australia, where it is an adviser to the government, and plans to establish those before setting its sights on Asian markets including the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and India. | wad collector
03/6/2008 16:33 | If you are not in favour of an armaments company then don't invest here. But presumably you are in favour of arming our armed forces. No-one has invaded the UK for 500 yrs for many reasons , principally our armed forces.Do we disband the Armed Forces?Or do we try to keep at the forefront of the technology? I don't like guns either, but we are at the mercy of people who do have them.I find the term "Ethical Investment" seems a bit grey here.I refuse to invest in Tobacco as I see no benefits to humanity there, but am comfortable with QQ. | wad collector
03/6/2008 15:48 | Maybe soon this company will shake off its sleazy image. After all it was Govt stupidity that (as usual) sold cheap can hardly blame directors that took advantage. Not sure that I am in favour of an armaments company per se. But as companies go and being really well to the fore in what they do there does seem more mileage here. Also faint chance a take over (by BAE?) if govt agrees. I hope prospects continue to improve as I am just about breaking even having bought in just before Private Eye blew the story. | ssords
29/5/2008 12:04 | i think they still retain their golden share even if they sell their shareholding. I believe they still have a golden share in BAE. | oregano
29/5/2008 11:50 | if gov sells their golden stake, tho, that makes a takeover by the likes of BAE more likely? | salisburysmith
29/5/2008 10:28 | Maybe wrongly i have sold mine. whilst the results seem good, there appear to be sellers over 200p, and the rumors of the government placing are never far away. given problems with governement finances, you have to assume a placing is a probability. i'd like to buy back at 180p. | oregano
