... words come to mind like "hell hath no fury" and "only one grown up left in the room" whilst their "Technicolor decided to launch a three-year transformation program to adapt to these new market realities ..." could be speak for a reality of not being able to compete and potentially making matters harder. It feels to me that perhaps the big daddy in this market said no already which would very much feel like a good decision.

That language looks very much like Technicolor softening it's shareholders up for a (relatively lowly valued) bid for it's STB business. I wonder who may like to take out a direct competitor....

... yes I thought that was a rather too blatant swipe but could not work out if 3.1 was meant to figure in q2 for Arris. I was also intrigued by the intensity of the choice of words in "Structural decline in video subscribers and significant components challenges are causing massive disruption in marketplace - SCALE is key to achieve sustainable profitability - ACCELERATED market consolidation of suppliers is likely".

Not pretty reading, but Technicolor confirmed guidance for the full year which perhaps accounts for the bounce.

I noticed the following boast, presumably at Arris' expense:

"In North America, Technicolor is the only company delivering so far the new DOCSIS 3.1 gateways to Comcast, Cox and Rogers and has also started to deliver the equivalent product to Charter."

Thanks Andy. I had been concerned about MLCC's earlier in the year - it seems that if it's not one thing (memory) it's another! At least Technicolour hasn't been punished so maybe these issues have been telegraphed well enough in the past. If you look at the $210m in deferred revenue due to component shortages they haven't done so badly on the revenue side - & at least that should come through in the next half.

There is plenty here in Technicolor's results this last week to spook the market about Arris if that is the way one would like to read it. I feel though that there is enough said about this quarter and with a measured view already from Arris in their last transcript. However, the strength in the choice of words by Technicolor (see page references above) does make one wonder if Arris has had a harder time than expected on some prior expectations, especially CPE components and revenues. I think that the market was somewhat generous to Technicolor in its reaction to these results. Where this leaves us with our own expectations for Arris on Wednesday is unclear. This could easily explain some of the enthusiasm to sell this week. I am inclined to give Arris the benefit of the doubt after their relaxed tone in early May, whilst Technicolor may well have been more susceptible to revenue loss and component issues. I do not know, but this does add to the risk in coming days and for the outcome of this week's results. If Arris do deliver $B CPE sales and a more sanguine message about component delays and outlook and 3.1 then the market bruising this week could turnaround to chase some shorters away promptly. This certainly adds a lot to anticipate this coming week - will Arris share Technicolor's tone and disappointment - or rise above that with more business as usual and beats.

A whale breaches near the Chilkat Range in Alaska. Your Shot Producer David Y. Lee writes, “Great job being patient, getting ready, and anticipating a second chance at capturing this moment. Well done Kyle. I love how wide you made this frame, including the mountain range in the background which offers a fantastic sense of place.” Photograph by Kyle Aiton

Your Shot photographer Subhash Nair captured this moment of a male lion shaking off water droplets from his mane. Producer David Lee, who selected this image for the July 18th Daily Dozen writes “Awesome Subhash. As you can imagine, I see A LOT of photos of lions in nature, so I love the different moment that you are sharing. Fantastic use of a slow shutter speed to capture the motion of this majestic animal drying off. I love the shape its mane creates, I love how its eyes are closed, I love the water spraying off. I just love this moment. Great seeing. Well done. Very well done.” This image was Photograph by Subhash Nair

Comcast firing on most cylinders. Losing some video customers but more than made up for on the high speed internet side. They are guiding to a further reduction in capital intensity this year in cable communications, driven by decrease in cpe expenditure.

Thank you for your words of wisdom and encouragement.
It really is coming on and will look really good and there should be a nice profit in it but currently all we can think is

WHY?

... probably and perhaps as much the lemmings after other recent trite - I can see Arris at the conference call next week saying 'we told you so' - so someone has to lose face and my money is on those who whistle around the sheep - bring on this time next week!

Very nice Alex I spent last winter holidaying as much as possible ready for a 6 month building project this summer. My voyage of discovery so far this summer has been1. Brick layers are really good if somewhat rough around the edges2. Electricians very good 3. Carpenters have no concept of bins or sweeping brushes4. Gas safe engineers no concept of turning up or charging what has been agreed. Currently on the look out for our 3rd one so far. 5. Utility companies especially Western power have you by the short and curlies6. Neighbours started off loving the fact that we are transforming the village eyesore back into a lovely old Victorian house however hate the noise and disruption, I'm thinking of leaving the country when the gas and electric close the road for a week in August 7. Bringing it in on budget is a challenge. So hope you have a nice time, I'll live vicariously and roll on October

Today I commence another trip South to Southampton to board a ship for a voyage of discovery and will be once again away on the high seas when the results will be announced. This time I will be in Greenland for the first time and looking forward to cooler climes for a couple of weeks.
I think we are at the real start of the next phase in the growth of Arris.

I see this as all part of the great rewind - computing and networking and storage cache and for IoT - all backing back down into the home - watch the renaissance of CPE - then add to this the wireless and wired opportunities to backhaul - and the cable/tel cos suddenly have a phoenix investment under the ground and over - long live the suppliers of edge computing and home gateways and network equipment - and dare I say set top boxes though carrying a deeper home and network profile with many more bags of tricks - new goals and exciting times still to come - "its coming home"!
