14/2/2024 21:06 | FT: NatWest poised to confirm Paul Thwaite as chief executive NatWest is set to confirm interim boss Paul Thwaite as its permanent group chief executive, with the state-backed lender preparing for the government to launch a public share sale before the end of the summer. The appointment is subject to approval from NatWest’s board, which is due to meet on Thursday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the plan. A formal announcement is expected on Friday at the same time as the bank’s full-year earnings. Unquote I think it's not a good sign - over the years they have found it increasingly difficult to find really competent CEOs and the slow slide towards mediocrity simply continues, IMO. | polar fox

14/2/2024 07:12 | Inflation has come in better than consensus: CPI unchanged at 4.0% Core CPI unchanged at 5.1% RPI down from 5.2% to 4.9% Now we can enjoy a significant drop in CPI over the next four months, especially in April when the energy cap will fall by about 15% or so. The FTSE likes it and has popped up by around 35 on IG. | polar fox

13/2/2024 13:43 | Equities drop sharply as US inflation disappoints some. CPI is down from 3.4 to 3.1, but some had pencilled in 2.9. In addition, core CPI is unchanged at 3.9 - the Fed won't be happy with that. The DOW on IG lost a quick 300 points. | polar fox
13/2/2024 08:45 | Nationwide increasing tracker and fixed rate mortgages Nationwide is increasing some of its tracker and fixed rate mortgages by up to 0.25% from tomorrow. Those borrowers affected include new and existing customer deals, plus those looking to borrow more or switch rates. It comes after Santander announced it was going to reduce some of its mortgage products earlier today. Justin Moy, managing director at EHF Mortgages, explained that swap rates (which impact the cost of lending money) have increased over the last few weeks, meaning rising rates are not unexpected. "Lenders will inevitably be dancing around the rates over the coming weeks, balancing cost, service levels and appetite for certain types of business," he said. "An interesting few weeks coming up for borrowers and brokers alike." Mortgage rates on the high street have fallen over the last two months as markets have become more optimistic about a base rate cut this summer. However, today's move by Nationwide suggests David Hollingworth, a director at L&C brokers, may have been onto something in our 6.18am post in suggesting rates may have bottomed out for now. 12/2/2024 16:41 | The government will want to give the public a good value for money entry point which will probably be around the 180 mark. I can therefore see this falling a bit more until this is finalised and the monkey is off our back. Obviously the results could well affect my 180 price up, down or flat but still think I’ll keep watching for now. I wonder how many shares private investors will be able to buy? | xongkudu
12/2/2024 16:05 | Something else: NatWest Group is finalizing proposals to pay out about 350 million pounds ($442 million) in staff bonuses ahead of its annual results, which are expected to be the most profitable since its rescue, Sky News reported citing unnamed sources. --The lender's new bonus comes below the prior year's figure of GBP367 million and amid government plans for a retail share offer that could sharply reduce its 25% remaining stake in the bailed-out lender, Sky News. -- NatWest wasn't immediately available for comment. unquote I don't know why 25% is mentioned, when it's currently 35%. | polar fox
12/2/2024 15:55 | IMPORTANT I've just spotted that a new Q4 2023 Analyst Consensus has been issued, dated last Thursday. I was wondering if an update would be available in time for Friday. It's readily available on Google, as is last November's, for comparison purposes. Some of the numbers for 2023 are changed here and there, but the total dividend remains at 16.8. | polar fox

11/2/2024 08:40 | Storyline in today's ST, but paywall protected: Treasury admits inflation will rise again this week unquote Google has: The government has admitted that key data this week will show inflation rising again, in what will be a further blow to Rishi Sunak's goal of taming price increases. unquote Expect the gov't to dismiss a rise as a 'temporary blip', knowing full well, as I posted on Friday, the four months Feb - May will see CPI falling sharply. That's baked into the math. US CPI is out on Tuesday and is expected to drop from 3.4% to 3-3.1%. That won't help the mood here on Wednesday. | polar fox
