B+, last time I went to Beijing I only realised after 3 days that the overcast and dreary weather was in fact thick smog. The weather forecasts all showed long sunny days but when you looked up all you saw was grey! Same thing in Shanghai. But a couple of hours out from Beijing at the Great Wall it was sunny and 95 degrees - very weird!

Meanwhile, I think he would. He has a very similar style of writing as you, uncannily similar. And only ever posts when you post. And has the exact same views. Remarkable.

In answer to requests from some posters :-

I found ryelodge's post, No. 8626, original, stimulating and very well written.

I don't know ryelodge personally, but he does seem to be a 'great guy' and I look forward, with the utmost anticipation, to his future contributions.
I hope he holds the same opinion of me.

All this new electricity they need to produce will be from burning fossil fuels, I take it? If the cities are so polluted, solar power is out of the question. Burning coal and oil is the way forward.....to more pollution. A Catch 22 situation for the Chinese, who really don't give two hoots over little things like 'carbon neutral', human rights and so on...

Soubry almost in tears as she announced her resignation. Oh, shame.

Dreadful woman. I look forward to her political obituary.

Losos

China is number 1 for electric vehicles. The country is so polluted. And they have, as you will have read, a strategy to become electrified.

Friends went to Shanghai a couple of weeks ago and said the pollution was terrible.

Keyno - Thanks
B+ Lots of good stuff on EV'sw above, I had no idea China was so heavily into electric buses.

I would like to know if the claims for distance travelled on one full battery charge are for a warm summers day or at night with heater, headlights, wipers, radio all in use. I think that there is a big difference but no one seems to be mentioning this haha.

All this old, publicly available info on GKN CV joints, sintered metal and China's drive for electric cars to support a positive view on MRO's outlook.

No believers in a perfect market here then.

Little bit of sarcasm there MW I think!!

Finally, a GKN ePowertrain release from early 2017

“Shanghai, PRC, 18 April 2017: China will become a global production hub for GKN’s state-of-the-art electrified drivelines in 2018, when production of its latest eDrive technologies commences at its joint venture facility in Shanghai. The country is the world’s fastest-growing market for electrified vehicles, and GKN forecasts that its Chinese joint venture – Shanghai GKN HUAYU Driveline Systems (SDS) – will produce over 1 million eDrive units per year by 2025.

SDS is set to manufacture the GKN Driveline Multimode eTransmission for a domestic Chinese automaker from 2018. It is also scheduled to start production of GKN’s first complete eDrive system in 2019. The complete eDrive system packages the electric motor, inverter and eAxle reduction gearbox within a single housing. It will first appear on a European OEM’s small car platform that will be sold globally.

The scale of the SDS eDrive production hub in China will increase over the next seven years, with additional supply agreements set to commence for a range of domestic and international car manufacturers. Production of electric and hybrid vehicles in China is forecast to grow by more than 400% by 2025, to just under four million vehicles per year*. GKN forecasts that SDS’s eDrive production will exceed 1 million units annually within the same time frame.

And from CNBC

“China's electric vehicle market has seen great growth in a short period of time and will continue to grow rapidly despite Beijing's shifting subsidies, according to one expert.

In 2014 there were only 50,000 electric vehicles sold, but in 2018 that number has increased 10 times. Each of the next few years will see the sector's market share grow by 40 percent, Jacob George, vice president and general manager of Asia Pacific at U.S.-based global marketing information services company J.D. Power, told CNBC last week.

He predicted that there will be continued growth in the new energy vehicle sector and new companies are likely to arise.

While, China may not meet some of its more ambitious targets pertaining to the electric vehicle sector, its policies and measures are sound, he added.

Some of those goals include plans for total annual sales of 2 million electric and gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles by 2020 and for manufacturers to at least have one electronic vehicle produced by 2019.

Noting that 2020 "is just around the corner," George said he didn't expect the country to be purely relying on electric vehicles by then.

"But is this the right strategy for the future? Absolutely. We do see this as a fundamental requirement so that each manufacturer at least has one electric vehicle, " he added.

For foreign automakers to thrive in China's electric vehicle sector, it is important for them to work with other Chinese battery manufacturers closely and adapt their existing technology to suit China's focus on longer-range vehicles, George said.

His warning follows after the Wall Street Journal recently reported that General Motors' plans to ramp up electric vehicle production in China saw a set back after the automaker found the Chinese-made batteries it intended to use failed to meet its own performance and safety standards during testing.”

CHINA - ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARTICLE IN FORBES LAST YEAR

“With EVs still at a cost disadvantage to vehicles made with traditional internal combustion engines (ICE), rapid growth in EVs has been made possible by China’s very generous subsidy policy. To encourage the growth of the industry, China has provided manufacturing incentives to EV companies, as well as subsidies to consumers who purchase EVs.

For example, substantial incentives for the production of electric buses have propelled electric bus sales in China from just over 1,000 in 2011 to a high of 132,000 units in 2016. While electric bus sales in China were slightly lower last year as a result of cuts in the electric bus subsidy program, 99% of the 352,000 electric buses on the road globally are running on China’s streets and roads. There are now over 30 companies making electric buses in China.

In addition to granting incentives to manufacturers of EVs, China has also provided subsidies to consumers who purchase EVs. Depending upon range, China’s Central Government has paid subsidies from RMB 20,000 to RMB 44,000 ($3,000 to $6,600) per vehicle, and most local governments have added between 15% to 50% to that amount. Therefore, total government subsidies on the purchase of an EV with a range of 250 kilometers (150 miles) or greater has been RMB 66,000, or about $10,000.

In addition to consumer subsidies, many cities provide favorable policies such as the assured issuance of a vehicle license and increased access to carpool lanes to EV purchasers. For example, the city of Beijing caps the number of vehicle licenses issued each month in order to regulate the number of vehicles in the capital city. In any given month, as many as three million applications might be received for the 3,000 available new vehicle licenses, with the remainder going into a lottery pool. Buyers of EVs, however, are exempt from this process and assured of receiving a license.

Losos, GKN is very active in the electric car market. China wants to do away with fuel driven cars and trucks and the market there is huge, as is the pollution. All of the major car suppliers are moving into electric and GKN has many patents in electric drive systems.

I rather hope that Melrose hang on to GKN Powder Metallurgy - it is obviously the real growth area in both auto and aero. And GKN is one of if not the global leader in this technology.

I have noted MEANWHILES pleading for more MRO related comment. B+ has helped with yet more useful press releases.

The Honda decision is undoubtedly a blow for the car industry in the UK and petrol diesel seems to be on a gradual decline.

One might think that would be bad news for GKN but we should always remember that electric vehicles will still need CV joints. Is that correct ??? Or are electric vehicles going to have motors in the wheels ?? Will that eliminate the need for CV joints ??

GKN is a world leader in CV joints, they have specialised in this critical componant for 50 years.

So there you go MEANWHILE some MRO related comment haha. Let me know what you think.

Hi Losos

Yes, it is an accurate summing up.

Thank heavens Corbyn and his crowd are rapidly going down the drain. Porky’s attitude to the population in general and Corbyn towards the Jews are very similar. Pure hate.

And this is the individual who DEMANDS respect from all and sundry.
