Dividend maintained. Outlook for next year reasonable in the circumstances with one analyst forecasting -5% off profits for 2009. Capex being cut and coy looking to reduce borrowing. All in all, not too bad. Love that yield - if it continues. I think this must explain the jump in the share price on 27 November - some lucky sods must have had a peep at the results.

Suspect it may be because the market thinks they will follow M&B's example and cut or reduce the dividend.

Financial year end today 4th Oct,so this may account for some of the falls in the share price with investors anticipating bad news. However there is a trading update on Wed 15th Oct so we should have clearer picture of how things stand.

Amazing really, last accounts show dividend covered twice and net assets per share of £1.91; but they are a year old so some deterioration possible but surely not as much as the current share price suggests. Also NB directors buys.

By the way, 3.74 million shares went through the market on Friday - twice the running daily average of approx 1.65 million, so there might not be too many more shares left to sell.

Good find pherrom - here's the link to the article in The Times online:

Time to grab a big bargain once the selling stops. With the DOW tanking around 450 points since the Act rescue plan was passed in Congress, Monday is likely to be another bloody day for MARS holders. This is already a bargain and likely to be even more so.

The Times reports "talk" that Kaupthing are selling to cover client's margin calls - "trying to sell about two million shares".

I agree entirely. The thought of getting these for around a pound is quite mouthwatering. So I'll be buying on Monday at around 4.oopm then :-))

Lord Gnome - not quite as scary as Punch's market cap of £400m versus debt of £6bn!

MARS, GNK and MAB were all trashed today, depite the lack of sector news. I wonder if this has something to do with the rumours that the shorters are now targetting the pub sector, having been forced out of the banks. These share prices are now discounting massive declines in profitability in the sector but I can't see all the pubcos suffering in the same way as the banks and housebuilders have. Declines there will be, but its not Armageddon.

I think there will be further share price declines but anyone buying in at these depressed levels have good chance of long-term gain.

Does look a bit dodgy - but why the directors buys on 30th September if trouble ahead?

Glad I stayed out! Not sure what has driven this swift decline - MAB also had a torrid time today. Only common factor that I can determine is that both are up to their ears in debt. A net debt of £1.5 billions against a market cap of just £400 millions is a scary statistic. MAB are in a similar situation.

Glad I sold out at 214 in August. Presumably there's some bad news on the way.

Sold out at 217 and took my profit. I'll look to get back in again around 200.

Going like a train at present - it must surely stop, but where?
Dubwise - I couldn't see it as overbought yesterday, but it certainly is today. Surely a temporary issue with a share coming back so strongly from a heavily oversold position. Just shows the volatility of the current market.

Sector consolidation hopes seem to have rubbed off on the MARS share price Either that or the threat of recession has made everyone turn to drink! Whatever, it's nice to see the share price north of 200 again.
