From todays Times :-

World-wide hunt for the Beagle

The search for Britain's missing Mars probe Beagle 2 has turned into a world-wide hunt. Giant radio telescopes in the UK and United States were both being turned towards Mars in the hope of picking up a signal. Scientists were also planning to recruit a third radio telescope in Australia.

Taken from post #50..

"I think the most important thing to come out of this is that we've demonstrated the British public wants to do space science," he told BBC News Online.

Now where does he get that from?

it is understood that there was talk of renaming Mars, the Rioja Planet
in honour of a famous economist.

i would drink to that.

Had we got those pictures, we would have seen row upon row of red grapes.

Beagle has probably already been stripped down and turned
into a Dune Buggy by the plucky Martians

I'm afraid Xena is right too,(but would like to be wrong) and what a shame for a plucky British venture, they deserved a better result!

I do hope they try again, I feel sure they have the ability to suceed.

Okay Mars 3 did send back a picture, but it was hardly a panorama.

The probe sent back a few lines of a facsimile picture showing a bit of ground and fuzzy horizon, and then expired after 20 seconds on the surface, probably as a result of the dust storm raging on the planet at the time.

But after that it was never heard from again.

I just hope I can trust Jerry!!!

Re XWP #26 -- "In all previous cases of Mars landers either the landing has been perfect or the spacecraft has never been heard of again."

Not quite. The Russian Mars 3 I believe sent back a picture from the surface, then expired

Edit: I searched but could not find the Mars 3 panorama from 1971
