Debt markets won’t have it, a quarter of our debt is inflation linked.

Government does another Covid package, we will get a run on the pound.

Whilst simultaneously cutting inflation ? They are going to have let time burn I am afraid or become Ukzuela.

HMG will have to increase debt yet again to reduce energy bills.
Heavily subsidised is my bet, they will announce dramatic plans over the nest few weeks.

Worse than COVID, demand a similar approach.

It’s the energy bills this winter that will finish a vast majority of pubs off. I see they have fixed to the tune of an extra 3m per year (seem cheap).

If there ever comes a night when you cannot find a rammed pub in Covent Garden , you will know its all over for pubs (outside of covid like restrictions).
But Marstons has about 1500 pubs all over the country not just in the most popular place in the most populous city.

By the time the market has thinned down to those remaining profitable pubs , without the stake sold in the brewing business , how is Marstons going to service the debt ?

Jeffian is correct at 6163, although perhaps there will be fewer pubs/bar/licensed cafes in the future, the good ones will be profitable. Last night in the West End, a Youngs pub by Embankment was rammed with drinkers, mostly under 40, spilling out onto the street. It was the same at a Fullers pub in Covent Garden. Clearly Marstons is aiming at a different market in suburbia and they need to make sure they calibrate their offering to suit demand. I suppose one way to keep warm in the coming winter of high energy costs is to nurse a pint or two and a packet of crisps down at the pub.

there's going to be a large number of closures in the coming years across the hospitality industry.

I'm aware of a number of (freehouse) country pubs that for years have only opened at weekends. There is also an increasing number of rural pubs that have been taken over by local community groups.

Many pubs have been getting noticeably quieter for the last 10 years, especially mid-week, even in busy city/town centres and student areas - Covid has accelerated this and even the popular pubs don't seem to have recovered to any where near pre-pandemic levels. With the current inflationary pressures it's not going to improve anytime soon

I don't think traditional pubs will die out completely - but sadly in urban areas they will soon be outnumbered by wetherspoons and other 'budget' pub/restaurant chains with many of the more traditional tied pubs being sold off for residential developments (yet more student accommodation around here).

Things looking serious here.
Is the English pub dead?

Went to a country pub last week.
it was almost empty.
Now closed mon-thursday.
Obviously loss making.

I can see a reason why pubs are not as popular with the young as they used to be.

Have you ever tried talking to a late teen ?
Or phoning one ?

They don't communicate like that any more. Its all online so that a whole group can join the same chat. Phone apps pinpoint where all their friends are all the time.
They meet online and organise to meet "somewhere" it does not have to involve going to a pub and hoping someone else turns up.
Then the cost of drinking ex-supermarket is much lower
The older generation got annoyed at not being able to smoke.

Yes there will always be pubs , but there will be less and they are more likely to be eateries....

Not mass consumption of vertical drinking as once was.

and that long term share price decline from over £4 is evidence of the "growth" in the pub industry ?

jeffian - so you don't believe the decline in pubs ?

"Published: 04 July, 2022

According to real estate consultancy Altus Group, the number of pubs in England and Wales is now at its lowest point on record, down by more than 7,000 in the last decade"

This bit is older but shows the trend firmly in place

"ONS data confirm the large fall in the number of pubs, from around 50,000 pubs in 2008 to around 39,000 pubs in 2018."

I have seen it with my own eyes , many pubs I used to go in have closed.

Of course you could just believe I'm making it up.....

One of the stories being reported in the DM yesterday was , get ready for the £9 pint.

Although no doubt scaremongering the direction of travel is real.

Can only see the sector decline continuing. Also it seems the younger generation is less likely to drink.
