21/9/2021 17:44 | Boris Johnson has said people should not worry about putting food on the table this winter, amid surging energy prices and a cut to universal credit. The prime minister told BBC News: "I don't believe people will be short of food - and wages are actually rising." It comes after Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng warned some households face a "very difficult winter". Energy and food bills are rising due to a spike in global gas prices - and many families face a £20-a-week benefit cut. Speaking to the BBC in New York, where he has been meeting world leaders at the United Nations, Mr Johnson said the surge in energy prices was a "short-term" problem caused by "the global economy coming back to life" after the coronavirus pandemic. 21/9/2021 17:33 | “Various governments were quite happy to burden industry with the unnecessary costs of metrication and decimalization - why shouldn't it go the other way? Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.” But it wasn’t an unnecessary cost was it. It was a cost that saved costs in trade because we were adopting measures of a common system which produced savings and efficiencies year after year after that. Future couldn’t care less about your personal preference. | medieval blacksmith

21/9/2021 17:29 | Gecko, you are in the ballpark! By the reckoning of Min, I am historic, well past it. Now, he might be were he of that age on account of the blubber, turps and epic mental angst. And lack of exercise - he seems to think all sport is an infantile use of time. A shame as he needs to build up his lats in the gym on account of the vast weight of the chips on his shoulders. | psychochopper
21/9/2021 17:28 | The government is proposing to give all employees the right to request flexible working when they start new jobs, the BBC understands. A consultation is to be launched on the proposals this week. The plan would allow all UK employees to request a flexible working arrangement from their first day at a new employer. At the moment, workers have to wait until they have been in their role for six months. The proposals would also see bosses have to respond to requests for flexible working more quickly than the current maximum of three months. It would also force firms to explain why any requests were refused. It is understood that the consultation document will be published on Thursday by the Department for Business.
