We will also be able to drive down standards if we want to be more competitive. I mean why beat about the bush......the EU only pay lip service to rules and regulations the whole concept if the EU is a farce.

Merv, our exports to the EU will not be unduly affected because they only buy from the UK what they cannot source on the continent because we are an island. Leaving the EU will mean we will be able to source many things from the rest of the world without the huge tariffs the EU impose on them. Not very bright are you?

The buffoon is to give a news conference later, after the Cobra meeting, due to begin anytime. Lots of folk calling publicly for an extension to the transition - will that figure, seems unlikely? Sainsbury's warning of possible fresh produce "gaps".

Live | Politics latest news: France expected to drop freight ban in coming hours as Boris Johnson holds Cobra meeting.

France is expected to drop its freight ban in the coming hours so the flow of goods between the UK and France can resume, after chaos at Kent ports this morning.

French transport minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari said that a "solid health protocol” will be put in place in the coming hours to "ensure that movement from the UK" can be reinstated.

Britain has been cut off from large parts of Europe as authorities imposed bans on passengers because of concern about the more infectious mutant coronavirus.

The most dramatic intervention came from France, which put in place a ban on hauliers crossing the English Channel with their cargo.

Boris Johnson will chair a meeting of the Government's Cobra civil contingencies committee this afternoon amid warnings of "significant disruption" around the Channel ports in Kent.

Just goes to show that qualification in a certain area doesn't yield general wisdom.
