I will be very disappointed if Cumming goes, but even more if Boris ask for an extension which in this case Boris and the conservatives will lose my support plus 100 of others I know, neighbours and friends.

This what It Was. We have left the EUSSR. No going back. No DealHow joining the EU led to a big decline in UK industryBy JOHNREDWOOD | Published: JUNE 16, 2016There are also crucial issues to understand about how the asymmetric single market did damage to Uk industry. When we joined the EEC, now the EU, in 1973, more barriers to trade had been pulled down in manufacturing than in services. EU rules were often such that UK industry was badly damaged by the shock of joining and the continued shock of staying in as the rules increased and tightened. When the UK joined the EU we had a 45 million tonnes a year steel industry. Today we are battling to save an 11 million tonnes industry. When we joined the EU we had a 400,000 tonnes a year aluminium industry. Today we have just 43,000 tonnes of capacity left. When we joined the EU we had 20 million tonnes of cement capacity. Today we have 12 million tonnes.Just before we joined the EEC in 1971 we had a 1 million tonnes a year fishing industry. Today we have 600,000 tonnes. The October 2013 government "Future of Manufacturing" Report shows that between 1951 and 1973 metals output rose 3% a year. Since joining the EEC/EU it has declined by more than 6%Between 1951 and 1973 food and drink output rose by 5.6% per year. Since joining the EEC/EU it has fallen by 1% a year.Between 1951 and 1973 textiles output expanded at 2.6% a year. Since joining the EEC/EU it has fallen by more than 6% a year.Whilst it may not be fair to blame all this decline on membership of the EU, as there are other factors, it nonetheless shows categorically that joining the EU and helping create the so called single market has not helped us grow and has not saved many of our industries from decline. In some cases EU policies are the main driver of the disaster. The Common Fishing Policy is clearly the main reason for the dreadful decline of our fishing industry, as many foreign vessels were licenced to take our fish. Our energy intensive businesses were often damaged by the high energy prices required by the EU common energy policy. The EU has prevented UK subsidy of industry under its state aids rules, but has often provided subsidised loans and grants to businesses to set up elsewhere in the EU. The UK has seen a spate of factory closures balanced by new and expanded facilities in poorer EU countries. The UK lost van production to Turkey, car capacity to Slovakia, chocolate to Poland, domestic appliances to the Netherlands and the Czech Republic and metal containers to Poland amongst others in recent years. In various cases there was an EU grant or loan involved in the new capacity.Looking at our huge balance of payments deficit today in goods with the rest of the EU, we can see the long term impact of the EU's damage to our manufacturing capacity. This April's balance of payments figures show us in heavy deficit in machinery, vehicles, electrical machinery, mineral fuels, plastics, iron and steel, wood and clothing. Last year our total goods trade deficit hit £85 billion with the rest of the EU. Between 2008 and 2015 our exports grew at 5% with the rest of the world, whilst falling with the EU.Perhaps remain might like to answer the following questions:Why have we suffered industrial decline and closures with production shifting elsewhere in Europe since joining the EEC?Why do trade in surplus with the rest of the world but have such a huge deficit with the EU?Why have we ended up importing fish, electricity, steel and much else when we used to self sufficient?

Jon, Wales , Wednesday, May 27, 2020, 01:35:Sydney (comment 2) - Albeit off topic, I wholly agree with your thoughts re Mr Cummings. Boris should stand firm and support his advisor, and not give in over a media driven issue, for Boris would then be seen as weak leader.I trust all readers have noticed there hasn't been a proportionate reporting by the 'media attack force' around Mr Cummings' vehicle, ever so desperate to get pictures with their TV cameras. My opinion on the pack of news wolves is they were harassing Mr Cummings, including the obvious fact they were not social distancing in their questionable efforts, even when politely asked to do so. Everyone has the right to protection, Mr Cummings included.-What those news wolves SHOULD be reporting is to highlight illegal migration across the channel, and the fact French authorities appear to be doing little or nothing to stop it - despite UK taxpayers shelling out a fortune to help France do just that.We have many satellites which can pinpoint to less than one metre, yet they fail to 'see' illegal boat operations from French shores - or can they? It's been suggested French border force vessels turn off their transponders as they shadow illegal boat crossings into British waters - (Only Mr Macron could sanction such illegal behaviour)?I suggest France will do anything to get rid of THEIR illegal migrant problem and turn a 'blind-eye' to illegal channel crossings. The UK should sue France (or the EU) in this regard, for when all is said and done, France is a safe country - so one wonders why illegal migrants (or "irregular" migrants as the EU prefer to define them) dislike France so much, even when they shouldn't be there in the first place. This also highlights the failures of Mr Macron.Either way, illegal migrants MUST be returned to their country of departure, and people traffickers disrupted, caught, and locked up.

David Mortimer 27 May 2020 2:41PMThis is the remoaners last ditch attempt to salvage something from Brexit hence the big remoaner guns like Blackford, Heseltine, Campbell , Vesey and I notice the Tory MP's who voted remain, civil servants and now the clergy have all jumped on the bandwagon. This is a remoaner witch hunt pure and simple with sinister ulterior motives. If Boris Johnson sacks Dominic Cummings, this trial by media will become a regular occurrence and the Conservative party will be the target.

Michael Welby 27 May 2020 8:47AMWhat we've witnessed these last few days is the effort of the broadcast media and press (including this rag which, until yesterday, I subscribed to) endeavouring to influence the policies of a democratically elected government and which they don't like. That trumps anything DC did in my book

Janet Warrior 27 May 2020 8:42AMNice of these turn-coat Tories to put their heads above the parapet. They are all either Remainers wanting to damage their own Government to extend the transition, or those who have been on the sharp end of Dom's tongue and have fragile egos. Not a good look now the voters have heard Dom's side of the story.

George Jackson 27 May 2020 8:50AMThe OTT reaction to Cummings trip is very worrying for the sanity of some of the population of this country. Psychiatrists will need a Nightingale Hospital to certify these looney left, BBC, Sky and rubbish media reporters, because this hysteria is certainly making Britain appear to be a country of morons.

As in 1997, an incoming Labour Government will be obliged in 2025 to clear up the huge mess that this current Conservative Government will bequeath to our Nations. Massive un-repayable Government debts, embittered neighbours in Europe and collapsed industries will be our Tory legacy.
We shall have to go ‘cap in hand’ to our neighbours asking for re-admission to the EU on much less favourable terms than those we had until the Johnson Government destroyed our neighbourhood relationships. Sliding out from the subservient trade relations we expect to achieve with the Trump Presidency (if there’s time before November) will disrupt our relationships within NATO and the 5 eyes.
Never before in the history of barmy governments have so many been misled by so few.
