xxxxxxxxxy, you're right that Germany has benefited from the weakness of the Euro, but is it their fault?

When I was a boy there were about 12DM to the pound; by the time the Euro came in it had reached 2.2DM to the pound. This was no fault of the Germans, who worked hard in the period and managed their economy properly. It was the fault of the idlers and spendthrifts in England, France, Italy and the rest, who made their currencies ever weaker by their own conduct and actions.

After the avalanche of complaints about Emily Maitless's outburst, the BBC has doubled up on its reprimand to her. That shows the management, at least, still have some contact with reality.

Meanwhile her colleagues are complaining bitterly - which suggests they'd do the same given the chance. Time to sack the lot of them.

Starmer is correct. It weakens Johnson to keep Cummings. He may draw a line under the affair for a few days but the facts are the facts and the public is profoundly shocked. While true that there are simply no levers to get Cummings out if Johnson digs his heels in, the subject will fester and sooner or later will contribute to Johnson's downfall. Fundamental issues of trust and consent have been raised and Johnson has failed to deal with either of them.

For the sake of the reputation of British Science, Whitty and Vallence should resign.

The UK response to Corona virus is an international laughing stock. This is not the fault of UK scientists, but unless they disassociate themselves from Johnson they are going to damage the whole profession.

Outrageously silly. Defending the obviously indefensible makes him look incredibly craven.

He thinks he's Britain's Trump: he's just some chinless wonder who went to Eton.

I am indifferent to Cummings and what happens to him now. It’s irrelevant to me. However, what this episode has highlighted is the moral vacuum at the heart of government. We have Gove willing to embarrass himself by claiming he would drive a 30 miles round trip to test his eyesight and a PM and Health Secretary (and others) putting personal interest and career above public health. So that’s the far more concerning matter. We are governed by cowards, in thrall to an unelected advisor.
