23/1/2020 12:19 | Greta Thunberg told to study economics by US treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin takes swipe at activist’s call for immediate fossil fuel divestment Graeme Wearden in Davos Thu 23 Jan 2020 10.34 GMT Donald Trump’s treasury secretary has dismissed Greta Thunberg’s call for immediate fossil fuel divestment, saying the 17-year-old activist should go to college and study economics. In a withering slapdown on the climate emergency movement, Steven Mnuchin pretended not to know who Thunberg was, before dismissing her concerns as ill-informed. Asked whether calls for public and private-sector divestment from fossil fuel companies would threaten US growth, Mnuchin jibed: “Is she the chief economist? Who is she, I’m confused” – before clarifying that he was joking. “After she goes and studies economics in college she can come back and explain that to us,” Mnuchin added, at a press conference at the World Economic Forum in Davos. | ![]() maxk

23/1/2020 10:28 | Terry Smith runs the 'Fundsmith' fund. A very boring, take no chances fund...it's where I have the bulk of my money. Thank heavens! Sadly Mr.Elbee, the north of Thailand is stricken every year by the huge issue of 'burning', the farmers burn off the rice stubble and it causes dreadful smog; same goes for the middle of the country where they burn off sugar cane stubble...and Bangkok is a big NO NO... the US air quality index can go over 500! It went off the scale last year and reached 900...I head south this time of year to places like Phuket, where the air is much cleaner due to the fact there is little burning on the island. My recommendation to you though would be Penang in Malaysia; its wonderful; clean air and very civilised with beautiful scenery and lovely people; clean peaceful beaches and relatively cheap...food it also wonderful. | ![]() jordaggy
23/1/2020 10:18 | I'm of the same situation and opinion as you, jordaggy. But I dont know who Terry Smith is. Is there anywhere in North Thailand that isnt humid for an auld fella like me? [I lived in Singapore for two years and the humidity really had a bad effect on my breathing.] | ![]() mr.elbee
23/1/2020 10:17 | Update: The pound has rallied as doubts grew over the prospect of an interest rate cut by the Bank of England next week following upbeat data from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Sterling jumped 0.7% to $1.313 against the dollar after the CBI reported a pick-up in manufacturers' sentiment. Investors are now pricing in an interest rate cut next week as a 50-50 possibility, down from a 75% chance implied by markets on Friday. The pound's jump weighed on overseas earners on the FTSE 100, which fell into the red, down 26 points, or 0.3%, at 7,585. But the FTSE 250, whose stocks are more focused on the UK domestic economy, made gains, rising 0.2%. | ![]() jordaggy

23/1/2020 10:12 | MR Elbee, "There is no binary choice in most things on this planet" For many pensioners it is a binary choice, each and every year - food or heat. Now the licence fee adds more pressure on their financially stressed positions. "You buy less..less frequently(And there's the choice - buy less across the board so as to afford some meagre heating) and noan extra licence fee on top of such... | ![]() crossing_the_rubicon |
