'They don;t recognise the uk vote' ffs, what does that mean?

It's like me saying 'I don't recognise the uk speed limit' when caught speeding. It's just a nonsense collection of words with no pragmatic meaning.

Don't forget the European Q was not for Scotland.. it was a UK IN or OUT referendum. It's just happens to be on the losers site.

mm2 - no they didn't. Scotland didn't have a vote on leaving the eu. It was a uk vote.

They also voted to stay in the EU, and we are taking them out. But they don't recognise the UK vote result as a whole, wee jimmy is throwing out her dummy.

Independent Scotland is a SNP & Nikola Sturgeon dream NOT a dream of Scottish people. 55% (or more ?) of Scottish people vote to remain in the referendum. So make no mistake, this was an election and people, rightly so, voted of a local party to represent them in parliament.

SO..
SNP must realise & except election victory does not mean INDEPENDENCE.

Lade - who says scotland can't leave the uk under any circumstances? That's absurd - you seem to forget that very recently you had a vote on leaving and the vote was to stay. That's the reason you can't leave atm.

I'm all for another referendum for the scots - but surely, these votes should be at a minimum of 5 year intervals, and not everytime some obnoxious scottish politician calls for one.

I for one can see why the average scot wants to remain in the uk. Your scale makes it very difficult on such things as defence - or do those who want to leave expect the rest of the uk to defend it for free? And good luck trying to get trade deals with the eu - they'd be more interested in a deal with the bigger market of Yorkshire, purely on numbers imv.

But have a referendum in 5 years, if you vote to leave then fine - I'd support you leaving.

You're referring to the moronic English public though as opposed to your power brokers who will not under any circumstances allow Scotland to leave.

Doesn't that beg the question why ???

I'd go as far to say that your average thick Jockludite is exactly the same as an ageing employee with 25 years experience in a large company, they contribute very little & expect to be carried by everyone else.

Ladeside, I'm Crankies biggest fan! I'd love for Scotland to do one, A UK without Scotkand would enable investment on unpresidented levels starting with the Northern Powerhouse. I do however feel extremely sorry for all the unionists who don't vote SNP in general elections, however it has to be acknowledged that many Scots are disingenuous in their voting patterns between referendums & general elections, they seemingly think its acceptable to want all the pro's without any of the cons.
Unfortunately the SNP have burnt their bridges with many south of the border.I wouldn't be at all surprised now if the majority would happy to see Scotland plough their own furrow, particularly when considering disprortional funding & the lengths Westminster have bowed to the Scottish Nationalists in terms of devolution.

9 out of 10 Scots a burden to the state BB

So WHY are you so intent in keeping us in the "union" and why are you so terrified about us leaving ??

I've yet to have any little Englander answer this question.

Come on tricky trees give us your insight ???

Boris could well score further brownie points by abolishing the tv licence fee. Makes so much sense - get rid of hundreds/thousands of non-productive jobs (other measures should ensure opportunities in the wealth producing sector for those displaced), saves the worry and hassle of paying the fee, level playing field with those who don't pay for the service, and from a more global perspective, a move to lower the complexity of the overall financial system. Obviously paid for by taxpayers - probably an insignificant increase. Allow the beeb to advertise when the rates are above £1m per minute. Cap salaries at £1m for the exceptionally talented (would there be anyone?). Remove all the dross programs (a matter of taste, but surely some agreement could be reached over what is extremely niche or dross).

G2 fair point, we do need credible opposition. That said, once the majority of people use the information available to them to hold governments to account the better, I think the current format of government would change. TBH these people put themselves on unrealistic pedestals. I hope the government does sincerely reach out to the other parties to get cross party consensus especially regarding social issues, care etc, along with a green/climate agenda... some of that needs to be cast in stone but there should be cross party ambition to stay ahead of the curves we set. It's not difficult, society is hierarchical, but what we need to do is make sure those at the bottom of the pile have a continuously improving standard and an opportunity to improve themselves if they so wish. The UK needs to aggressively move into the new and emerging technologies and employ the masses in those technologies. Being outside of the eu may give us an advantage here.

A lot can been done to improve BBC, starting from the fat salaries to too many employees, unwanted programs (well said), which only a few are may watch. The best awnser ofcourse is to go private and get rid of the licence nonsense.

Michael Gove rejects Nicola Sturgeon demand for independence vote

Simon Johnson, scottish political editor
19 DECEMBER 2019 • 1:18PM

Nicola Sturgeon has launched a "neverendum" campaign for independence as her official request to Boris Johnson for the powers to hold another separation vote next year was rejected.

The First Minister said the UK Government has a "democratic duty" to hand her the powers for another vote on breaking up Britain after the SNP won 48 out of 59 Scottish seats in last week's general election.

Although Michael Gove later rejected her demand, she argued this could not be sustained and challenged the UK Government to explain how this would tally with Scotland being in a voluntary Union.

But she repeatedly refused to rule out a third vote if she lost, or to repeat the promise she made before the 2014 referendum...
