04/1/2019 18:12 | Hmmm, I am sure that the lottery money is put to good use. It is not the hardest thing in the world to run so it should be nationalised and the beeb simply told to show and promote it. As Min says, 115m is a bit sick, the system should focus on making millionaires not multi millionaires. A 20 year old winning a million will still need to work. | ![]() 1carus
04/1/2019 18:11 | Looks like Minerve has completely lost the plot - now he's posting poetry. So some folk win the lottery, and the win paid for by others, some of whom are too lazy to work harder and longer to attain wealth. Of course, some are unable to do just that. Good thing is that the money is generally recycled into the economy to provide jobs and income for others - and a spot more tax for the government to waste. | ![]() poikka
04/1/2019 17:57 | The version that I heard was that "the lottery was a tax on those who aren't any good at maths"... :-) That said, the occasioanl; flutter isn't going to do you any harm. @k38 4 Jan '19 - 13:25 - 241524 Too many rollovers.. i don't trust them. I think they 'control ' the results. It's software after all.... It's not software - the reason it's done with the drum full of balls is because it's genuinely random [1]. For the same reason there's no way of "controlling" the results to give a more even distribution of prizes, they get what they get, they're just subject to the laws of statistics. [1] I have a friend who, at the time, was a techie at an outfit that specialised in mathematical and statistical software. They were contracted by Camelot some months before the lottery "went live" to check that the machines they were going to use were random. They ran them 24 hours a day for months doing draw after draw after draw and analysing the results. At the end of tens of thousands of draws they could find no pattern whatsoever in the numbers drawn - the machines were generating random selections. It ain't "fixed"! | pawsche
04/1/2019 16:59 | Lottery --- use to be about 13 mil to 1 for a big win. Statistically more chance of having 2 numbers in the 6 consecutive than not. All combinations carry an equal chance, including last weeks numbers - which would be funny. The best way of increasing your chances of winning is to buy one ticket, from zero to 13mil to 1. But as generally stated --- poor mans tax. | ![]() 1carus
04/1/2019 16:47 | Safe and sound at home again, let the waters roar, Jack. Safe and sound at home again, let the waters roar, Jack. Long we've tossed on the rolling main, now we're safe ashore, Jack. Don't forget yer old shipmate, faldee raldee raldee raldee rye-eye-doe! Since we sailed from Plymouth Sound, four years gone, or nigh, Jack. Was there ever chummies, now, such as you and I, Jack? Long we've tossed on the rolling main, now we're safe ashore, Jack. Don't forget yer old shipmate, faldee raldee raldee raldee rye-eye-doe! We have worked the self-same gun, quarterdeck division. Sponger I and loader you, through the whole commission. Long we've tossed on the rolling main, now we're safe ashore, Jack. 04/1/2019 14:47 | Years ago I calculated the odds of all the various possible lottery wins. A £10 win was about 50 to 1, so when I hadn't won at all after a year I packed it in. | ![]() grahamite2

04/1/2019 14:01 | If you buy a lottery ticket for next week's draw in the belief you will win, you statistically stand more chance of dying. You therefore should be preparing your funeral rather than buying the lottery ticket. | minerve

04/1/2019 13:33 | I read recently that people in the poorest areas of the UK spend an average of £15 per week on the lottery including scratch cards that are sold in every shop and garage. I agree with other posters that it is bad. Poor folk lured into parting with cash they cannot afford to play a game of chance where the odds of winning a worthwhile amount are in the tens of millions to one, a jackpot goes beyond the realms of possiblity. I was a Maths teacher years ago, that is possibly the reason I would never buy a lottery ticket. They are lambs to the slaughter. | ![]() goldfinger16
04/1/2019 13:25 | Too many rollovers.. i don't trust them. I think they 'control ' the results. It's software after all....But let's say they are real rollovers, why not every 10mill one draw ? Is there a law saying one person must win the lot ?I give up playing long time !! | k38

04/1/2019 13:04 | Happy New Year to All. Nice to get away from the Brexit stuff over the festive season. When it came up in conversation most people are worn down by it and just want to get on with it. To the point where not interested in a second referendum and would rather WTO than prolonged drawn out negotiations. (Wide ranging age group too, and surprised that included a lot of younger people. Employed, admittedly) | ![]() 1carus
04/1/2019 12:57 | I just saw that a couple won £115 million on the lottery. More people might have a flutter on that Lottery if that £115 million was split into 50 plus prizes of £2 million. It is just obscene to pay out a prize so large. I stopped doing it when they raised the stake to £2 a ticket. The Euro millions is even more per ticket. The Fat cats running that Lottery are crooks lining their own pockets, they gave millions to rebuild Hastings pier, read this link. Disgusting!! Richard Branson wanted to take the Lottery over..enough said!! | ![]() jacko07
04/1/2019 12:38 | Talking about fat cats . The folks who won £115m on lottery want to buy a new Jag x type lol | ![]() pal44 |
