Evening all, I need some new acoustic guitar strings. Havent re strung the guitar since I got it some years ago. Its a Gremlin round backed electric acoustic (never used the electric side). I dont know what guage the strings are but really want the same as I dont want to mess up the feel / sound. Strings are all metal.

Any ideas as to what strings I should get and a good gauge and a good website to buy them from ?

Thanks

And as a thank you (dont know if its already been posted) but this is amazing

my brother plays bass, and he boils his strings now and again, in a big saucepan.. works I think

Wolterix, and maybe the beer had an effect eh? :-). I tend to strum quite hard but dont bust to many many strings these days (although I'm not gigging on guitar at the mo).

I've always had issue with intonation esp the D and G stings bring noticeably sharp. I've since (only now) discovered that I fret too hard which causes the notes to sharpen and since I've lightened my fretting, it is much better (but I have to remember not to fret so hard)

Also I've got a new tuner, one you clip on the headstock and this has proved that my Washburn acoustic and certain strings on the Strat have slight intonation problems and go sharp. So maybe I'm not going mad after all.

I use Strings Direct as well, but I will not use D'addarios as they as they just intropfuce buzz and go out of tune too easily. I'm using TI "rock" strings .10 guage on my Strat and their roundwound "jazz" bass strings custom guage and DR Sunbeams on my basses.

Bamboo2, last of the big spenders :-))

merlin cheers. in all honesty the guitar strings are old.
they lost their 'stretch'-ability a good while ago.

i'm going to have to bite the bullet and replace the lot

Never had that happen bamboo2, could it be the heat?

I guess different tunings will emphasise diffferent harmonics which may suit some styles of music better.

As an example Ronnie Wood plays (or played) without a E string and uses open G tuning. This means the open strings will give a G major, so barring up the fretbooard using the A string as the root (but now detuned to G)is great for rock chord riffs, think "Brown Sugar" and "Start me up" etc (apologies if I'm telling you how to suck eggs)

Glad you are liking the Bowie Stuff, I just think he is an excellent writer and performer.

Some more you to mull over :-)

All the Madmen (Man who sold the world)

Lets spend the Night together (Alladin Sane - his take on the stones hit)

broke a string. just snapped. over the weekend. not even playing at the time...

so why do song writers and bands play around with tunings?
is it as simple as wanting to sound different?

merlin, getting to like your bowie selection.
