And the dress code for the AGM would be:- Long term holders wear heavy coats, short term holders wear running shoes and shorters.......no silly disguises please, just plain shorts will do.

Just a reminder, AGM is 3 weeks today, IQE are arranging a tour post AGM to the new mega- foundry in Newport where investors will see 1st hand the new reactors.

If you are thinking of going you should register your interest in the link. Investors should vote as they see fit and don’t forget if you are holding in a nominee account you need to inform your broker how you want your shares to be be voted. The vast majority of ‘our’ shares for one reason or another are in my wife’s name, Barclays have confirmed her instructions ( well they were mine actually ;-)) and will vote in her name.

If you are coming , introduce yourself,

Anyone else pick-up on Friday's somewhat clandestine trading activity..?

Bodes well if we can maintain higher highs + higher lows through the early morning 'witching hours'

I forgot this very interesting and if true awesome rumour 😎

Stating

Echoing rumors aired earlier this week, an unnamed glass manufacturer claims Apple is considering three types of prototype glass to incorporate into the upcoming handset. More importantly, specifications call for a full-face design with TrueDepth "notch" and no cutout for a Touch ID home button, suggesting "iPhone SE 2" will make the switch to Face ID biometric authentication. Why the glass requires a physical notch cutout instead of an ink mask was left unexplained.

This would mean that the cheapest and ‘budget’ 2018 fall release iPhone will have Face ID and 3D sensing, that’s vey very exciting it if true would increase sales of that model through the roof ... and that’s £££; to IQE

Didn't the "Big W" appear in the 1963 film "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world" as the location of the hidden treasure?? :-)

Here is a recent review on driverless cars. Note that the most reliable system uses six Lidars. Tesla has none.
.

.......Waymo, the self-driving division of Google's parent company, Alphabet, was formally launched in late 2016, but its self-driving tech has been in development since 2009.

And that near-decade of work has paid off in arguably the most reliable driverless car we’ve seen to date.

Disengagement—when a human driver has to take control of a self-driving car—is the primary metric by which automakers gauge their AI's technical skill. And Waymo’s cars lead the pack: Waymo self-driving cars disengage 0.18 times every thousand miles.

For context, if a Waymo car drove across the United States and back, a human would on average have to intervene one time. Only GM’s self-driving cars come close to that level of disengagement, averaging about 1,000 fewer miles per disengagement.

How has Waymo’s team achieve this level of reliability? With a powerful system of six lidar sensors that instantly detect any potential hazards, and a deep learning system sophisticated enough to respond instantly to obstacles and weather hazards.........

Radar v Lidar for the automotive

Perhaps that’s where the Tesla guy has come unstuck, radar not lidar:)

Thanks for the link Picobird. To be honest, there's nothing much new in his article. One comment that made me question his grasp of IQE's significant and current opportunities away from Apple was this:"By branching out, investors may place a higher valuation on the shares as customer risk falls. For example, the company is trying to move into infrastructure applications such as base stations, radar and CATV. For 2017, the contribution from more profitable products helped operating profit from wafer sales rise 58%."Trying to move into . . . base stations, radar (?LIDAR) ?? As the leading supplier globally, IQE are going to have to be on top of their game just to keep up with demand from these exciting next-generation sectors .

I only made the point that the chairman said he would update the market when we made progress that would improve our outlook, that there were several areas of the business where HE SAID this was likely to happen, and that he said this 2 months ago so we should expect an update shortly.

pandering to the whims of shareholders !
we own the bloody thing !

Maybe there is a difference between pandering to the needs of short term shareholders and acting in the interests of long term holders, which includes not pandering to the needs of short term shareholders ;-)

Just to follow on from sweenoid's last post... Also the agricultural industry is moving towards increased sensing and automation. The big players like john deere, case ih, new holland, envisage a future of farming in which a fleet of vehicles can be controlled from a central hub. Those vehicles would of course be fitted with lidar, and a range of sensors collecting sharing data on the vehicle and ambient conditions.

That data collection and sharing will almost certainly need to make use of 5g due to the amount of data being collected and the speed at which it would need to be transferred. This data collection will drive greater efficiency, which is becoming ever more critical as the worlds population continues to expand, and the demands on crop production increase. (This focus on optimising efficiency is often referred to as 'precision farming').

Worth looking up the case ih driverless trator on youtube, its been doing the rounds at marketing events and i know for a fact that development is in progress. Its not a concept which is 10 years away from production.

On the automotive front, i could imagine a feature whereby a car will use face id to configure itself to an individual's preferences... Seat position, playlist, mirror positioning, temperature. Useful for anyone who car shares with their spouse or kids.

Once this tech becomes available, and more commonplace, i expect it will trigger a wave of innovative ideas not previously conceived.

Interesting times.

The automotive industry provides rich pickings for IQE, future ‘vehicles’ will become totally dependent on ‘sensors’, Use VCSEL powered LIDAR, and not only contain electronics that enable autonomous driving but be equipped with lavish in-car entertainment and wireless communications, all these will be totally dependent on Compound Semiconductor materials.

Companies like AMS are already saying that Industrial and automotive 3D sensing ‘markets’ will be as large as the wireless smartphone 3D sensing market, which is rather mouth -watering.

Interesting article in The Times this morning
