Himax results and comments out, I find them very pleasing, 3D sensing will become ubiquitous through 2019 in iOS AND Android.

In summary they are ready for mass production for high end Android smartphones NOW , because the various vendors have different ‘specs’ - no doubt including either VCSEL OR EE ( see my recent post) production will start later in year and main surge of 3D sensing Android phones will be released early 2019, their main competitor AMS have interestingly therefore stolen a march with their VCSEL wafer level optics stating they expect a high end Android customer, releasing product near Xmas THIS year, they DID specify 2018 release

Eitherways and the comments in the CC will be interesting 3D sensing in Androidis coming in a big way soon and IQE will be a major benefactor

If you want to listen to CC here is link to registration which will be simple, kicks off 1PM U.K. time

Reckon we could see a good deal more of this sort of morning activity. From first thing Level2 was stacked [possibly some shorts closing...?]

Intriguing times ahead as there is way too much [short] exposure for any kind of meaningful cover positions to be taken. Claiming the market is 'going to be more competitive' in the future is simply not a justification for such an aggressively negative stance.

IQE have market-leading tech [fact] and are well placed for their tech to have diversified commercial application. Potentially fatally, the shorters followed some sort of collective, herd mentality approach in a vain attempt to shoot down IQE. Great when it works horrible when it doesn't. Stock is pretty closely held at these levels.

Tricks will be played out - so expect considerable volatility over the summer months.

As I posted on 20 April, the share price was set to test the 100p level or close to it.

At 102p the 5th wave pattern was completed as I anticipated. I said then, there is no rhyme or reason for the fall in the share price only the fact that those following chart patterns and the shorters being able to manipulate the share price.

We are now in wave 1 of 5 which can easily see the price hit the 145p level and quite quickly before any small set-back.

Technical wave patterns have led us down and the hedge funds know they will now lead us back up.

A great trading share but what a pity the value of the company is discredited by its share price volatility!

Exactly Mad F.

Too add imo 140-150p is fair value until we get some more positive news re future earnings, £1 level should be seen as a discount.

Agree it was overbought in the run up to 180, full of naive investors thinking it was a one way bet. There is a different psychology at play now, the shares are in more secure hands. But of course the company need to deliver and 180 is probably too high without news of some sort, so it won't carry on going higher forever. Having thrown everything at it, however, shorters must know that £1 is the bottom, and that buyers have been attracted as we passed the 50DMA, and more will be as we pass the 200 and the upper resistance.

I think a reason to short is the very high market cap compared to earnings and people getting carried away by the value of the fundamentals and the growth opportunities. It is why it was shorted in the 170 area, the fundamentals and growth was the same as it is now, and they are important but you do need to consider current market value as well, otherwise it would continuously go up forever! Which btw I would not mind if it did!

Chartwise I think the medium term downtrend from 180 is around 132 at the moment. If that breaks then all signals are positive. I struggle to see why you would short IQE on fundamentals as the growth prospects are both strong and open to upward revision from many areas. So the only reason to be short is technical, and at 132 the charts become unambiguously positive.

Good to see this nice rise, I suspect anyone who bought around the £1 mark will be very happy this time next year (let alone those longer term holders). Patience is an underrated skill ;)

Above 125 and now shorts are squeezed. Difficult to unwind positions when no one wants to sell.

Good post Sweenoid and not so futuristic as it may sound.

My contact in a Hedge Fund in Hong Kong has been a buyer of IQE but unlike some of the Hedge's who seem to have only limited restrictions on the percentage they can short, his buying is limited by the size and liquidity of the company. He remains convinced IQE will be snapped up.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the share price when these shorters decide to go long of the stock!!

Thanks Sweenoid, informative as ever. I am a long term holder and agree one has to live with short term fluctuations as company builds its base. Problem a few months ago is people seem to have got fixated on Apple and forgot there is a big world out there

We been promised that short ‘squeeze’ for ages, I am sure it will come, trouble is that the shorting hedge-funds have far bigger ‘balls’ than the vast majority of PI’s who continually seem to ‘gift’ them their profits ? For me, the end play is a gimme, so short term fluctuations are of little interest but have provided some very good trading opportunities:-)

Anyhow

What will drive the share price here...and it will, is IQE’s ability to provide compound Semiconductor materials that are innovative and WILL make a real difference to people’s lives.

The trouble with Compound Semiconductor epitaxy is that the concept is so damn difficult to comprehend and therefore understand, this is why this link not only relevant and interesting it brings into focus something that we all surely familiar with, the simple spark plug, it explains what it does and how it’s going to be replaced by using a technology ( GAN ON SILICON) that IQE have a predominant market position in...and more importantly the partners to commercialise it ( Macom and ST Micro)

In a world focused on reducing carbon emissions surely this comment is totally relevant

“The precision control afforded by RF plasma-powered ignitions can largely reduce exhaust emissions and save on fuel by using a plasma to accurately optimize the fuel combustion process. Aggregated globally, a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency for combustion-powered vehicles would represent a significant leap forward in carbon emissions control”.

If anyone looks at my history of posts here over the last 3 years, you will tire of my references to how GAN ON SILICON will be disruptive to revenue, well AT LAST , 2018 will see the revenue stream which WILL be a veriable gravy train take off , RF basestations, power switching , microwave cooking , spark ignition etc etc -LDMOS has had its day :-)

Obviously Macom’s blog will paint an optimistic picture but the clues are there, I would love this comment to be true

“Following MACOM’s recently announced collaboration with STMicroelectronics to commercialize GaN-on-Si for RF markets, a plasma ignition could be in a low-end car market sooner than you think!”

Whatever- GAN ON SILICON revenues are so far NOT factored ( zero value) in any of the analyst estimates for 2018,OR going forward, that will change significantly over the next year, as hard evidence emerges.

Investor awareness of IQE will surely improve as applications for CS materials reach the ‘public eye’, true facial recognition using 3D sensing enabled by IQE VCSEL’s is the 1st, thermal imaging and sensing is likely going to be second followed by a plethora of others.
Later...

It’s sunny, let’s get out into that countryside.
