grity - the £38m will go towards building the infrastructure, not kitting out the fabs. That will be the job of the companies that rent off the CCR.

As Ime understanding Iqe make the Wafers & are fabless
So the foundrys are going to use the wafers
For fabrication which bears a huge cost.
But 38 mill to kit out a foundry is nonsense it takes Billons
If $$

FYI a brief interview with IQE's Head of Innovation about the Wales semiconductor cluster - he mentions the use of silicon wafers in driverless cars, smartphones, healthcare technologies, 3D sensing....

And comment from the CEO:

We are very lucky on this board to have Sweenoid to educate and inform us, and to whom I doff my cloth cap. This morning I had the 2016 IQE annual report, late I know but that's what happens with nominee holdings. Must say it is a brilliant piece of work, with explanations of much of what they are about in terms that a numpty like me can grasp. A few days ago I contemplated slicing my overweight holding, usually the signal for a sustantial rise in share price However recent news and the AR convinces me we could be on to something big, so for me it's back to sleep.

Plus the author spends way too much time drinking in this pub which no doubt clouds his judgement.

I always cringe when I read these sort of plugs. For example, "suffice to say they are used in robotics". Most random link to any end product I can think of. Your average Joe will now think the robot arms are made of CS. lol

Hello Share Moochers. After I commended IQE (IQE) the shares have gradually improved, now by some 200%. I very much considered taking profits. Only one thing stopped me last week: the thought that surely some predator had the Cardiff company in its sights. I’m now glad I didn’t sell for a different, more tangible, reason. The case to buy more shares gets better.

Ten local councils in the Cardiff region want to turn the area into a new Silicon Valley, like the one in California. This is no pie-in-the-sky idea. These local authorities have ponied up £38 million towards the project. The Welsh Assembly has already put down another £12 million.

The idea is to make compound semi-conductors. If, like me, you don’t know what these are, suffice to say they are used in robotics, the quickly-growing area to definitely be in. Semi conductors are also a big part of G5 phones and driverless cars. And they are vital to efficient solar power. The facility to make these thrilling gismos will be housed in a foundry in Newport, South Wales, making another 2,000 jobs.

Which brings me to IQE, which has become involved. It’s a specialist in compound semi-conductors. And demand for them is so strong that the share price has been slowly moving up from less than 20p to 64p as I write. In my view that share price has only just started to move.

But I should add that there are other companies in South Wales which make semi-conductors and they will also get part of the action. Even so, you can see the potential here. Welsh politicians see a new Silicon Valley as totally revitalising the Welsh economy.

Now as far as I know, IQE has not trumpeted this development very much. Which is refreshingly different to so many companies which come out with the least little thing in the hopes of hiking the share price. IQE is probably concentrating instead on turning itself into an extremely profitable company at the very forefront of some of the most exciting technologies currently available.

And now the Punter’s Return is open again.

I really hope you're right, sweenoid, and that there are, and are seen to be, the 'massive returns' you anticipate over time for the local authorities concerned and that this is eventually appreciated by the local electorate. It will only be so, though, if some of those rewards feed back into services that they want and value.

The initial reaction, judging by comments on the BBC website is almost entirely negative - 'councils should be spending our taxes on our local services, not lining the pockets of companies and their shareholders', seems to be the main bleat! After several years of cutbacks and austerity, I can understand the thinking, short sighted though it is.
