Advances in semiconductor technology increase efficiency, reduces energy consumption, add more functionality, enhances user experience, increases accuracy, precision and useability. etc etc.

In short better semiconductors make everything else better.

This is the one industry that is recession proof.

And IQE are right at the heart of current and future semiconductor trends.

Never wrong to take a profit Shavian, sell half then let the others ride is what I do. I have actually sold more than half and regretted the last sale but can't think like that.

The five big announcements from Google I/O

4/ VPS - visual positioning system

Most of us are familiar with GPS - global positioning system - but that technology can only get you so far. Though terrific for travelling around large areas outside, GPS has real limitations when you need something more accurate.

Google thinks VPS - visual positioning system - is how to fill that gap. Using Tango, a 3D visualisation technology, VPS looks for recognisable objects around you to work out where you are, with an accuracy of a few centimetres.

Google’s head of virtual reality, Clay Bavor, said one application would be using VPS to find the exact location of a product in a large shop.

"GPS can get you to the door,” said Mr Bavor on stage, "and then VPS can get you to the exact item that you’re looking for”.

The problem at the moment - and it’s a big one - is that barely any smartphones currently have Tango technology, and so even if VPS was ready today, few people would be able to use it. Lenovo released a Tango-enabled device last year, and another is due sometime in 2017.

Where Google goes, others will follow.

Seems that all the Tango devices use RGB-IR cameras i.e vison and Infra Red sensor. When I hear IR sensors I think of IQE.

Do we think that Mr Trump's little local difficulty will have a knock on effect on IQE's SP? Wall St sold off yesterday on political fears, specifically that a lame-duck POTUS will be unable to force through his tax-cutting proposals. The optimism of the US markets which has driven prices up since January now seems at risk. Most of IQE's big customers, and their own end-users such as Apple would face a down-turn if The Donald continues to be hog-tied or even impeached by his own stupid naivety. This would dampen IQE's prospects, at least in the short term. Do I top-slice some of these nice profits, or as a LTH just wait for the downturn to provide a top-up opportunity? Hmmmmm.

So presumably there's a long history of these multinationals making various suppliers rich beyond their wildest dreams then ? Only upgrades to tech. have been happening for donkey's years.

Wafer scale manufacturing refers to the manufacture of the components. Look at the advantages of their etched process vs. having to cut the wafer up in to strips for the cleaved process.

Edit: I'll expand a bit. The benefits of doing all your steps on the wafer itself are scale and efficiency, especially when it comes to handling. So if you can do all your etching, testing etc on the wafer without having to chop it up, you gain cost reductions and speed.

I can't help myself. It's been mentioned previously that macom do not produce any wafers in house. But the above pdf does state.
"Leveraging our in-house, wafer-scale InP manufacturing"

Thoughts?

Sweenoid Macom also mentioned their margins are 80% for etched facet lasers and they supply other laser manufacturers because they can sell them cheaper than other manufacturers can produce them. This is big..

IQE acquired NIL -nano imprint lithography to do just that
IQE's move to provide full service wafers where they not only produce the CS wafer but then 'etch' it or apply NIL is likely to significantly increase revenues.

Macoms presentation yesterday obviously went down well with US investors- they are big customers, but more importantly they 'voice' the technologies which are at the heart of what IQE DO

I therefore regard their announcements as a type of proxy for future performance of IQE
THE PDF of their presentation is here

If you understand what IQE does it's a rather pleasant read ;-)

Macom mention etch facet lasers quite a bit in their presentation, and also the lithographic process, is this something IQE help with, seems they can produce much cheaper than competitors?

This is well worth a listen if you have a bit of time. Webcast of Macoms presentation yesterday. Mind boggling numbers in laser growth, and a tantalising mention of 1000.s unit orders for GAN base stations right at the beginning, whilst still in acceptance testing with the two customers. Anyone got a view on the cost of these base stations, I assume it's an expensive item?

Edit: add a link

Yump, just the other day we were discussing these kind of things on twitter, anything with the word Energy, Chinese or Resources in the name RED FLAG

Then you get the miners - a big hole in the ground usually with a liar standing at the top of it !
