Royal Mail tracking website is down again and has been since Friday. Yes they need to modernise, but their inability to keep a basic key website online - or at least restore service quickly - says a lot about the management chain.

I think a lot of people might not know that there are two businesses. The reason that they changed their name from Royal Mail to International Distribution Services reflects the fact that there are two discrete businesses within the group. The first one is a European delivery business called GLS, which is a very, very good business. Made £350m of operating profits last year. As we say there, if you put that on 12 times, that on its own, would probably be worth about £4bn. Market-cap of the entire group today £2bn. So the market is valuing the UK business at -£2bn at the moment. Probably worth adding that the UK business has excess properties. So properties that they could sell off for about £1.5bn, so £1.50 a share. So, you could add that to the £4bn for the GLS business.

In terms of the problems with the UK business. The UK business needs to modernise. The UK business, obviously, has been historically very focused on letters. Letters are going into decline. They need to improve productivity and focus more on parcel delivery. That’s caused the industrial relations issues at the moment. If the management can get that productivity improvement through, that UK business, we reckon, could make £500m operating profits on its own. So, we think there’s enormous potential in the UK business as well.

I think it’s probably that, that Mr Krachinski is looking at. He can see, as well as we can, that there are lots of very valuable assets within this business and at the moment, the stock market is focusing on the near-term earnings movements and not looking at the long-term value.

It’s worth saying that we own about 10% of the business. Daniel Krachinski is going up to 25%, I think. We have spoken to Vesa, which is the family office of Mr Krachinski. So, we both know this business very, very well. It’s possible that he’ll make an offer for it at some stage. If he does make an offer for it, it’s going to be significantly north of today’s share price.

Hermes( or Evri as they now call themselves) have certainly upped their game - getting rid of useless lazy couriers in some areas, ramping up delivery speeds in others.

Our local Evri deliverer is a hard working chap. Very impressed.

Pretty much all my bills are online now, I get QR codes for train tickets on my phone. Unions also communicate with members electronically across county lines in an instant. Hopefully Mr Musk will make us some robots that don't moan and whine for a little extra lube or battery packs.

I agree everyone BUT do you recall the political "outrage" when the idea was floated of getting rid of cheques....

The same would happen here - there are still millions of little old ladies that rely on post for hospital appointment letters etc send xmas cards to their families. No politician will be able to face that down - especially a Labour one as they are likely to be charge when RM gives up the ghost!

The Union needs to get real or they'll go the way of the Coal Miners - you cant change time, technology and progress.
People just don't send or receive much mail - it's that simple!

I notice that ebay are putting big pressure on their sellers to switch to other providers (not always possible of course but ebay metrics mean sellers cannot afford late delivery, negative feed back etc)


@notmyrealname Not sure the unions will "lose". They are playing a long game here - their activity should be enough to put off anyone mad enough to try and buy the company, and in the long run, if they force the go go bust, they think think the government will be forced to nationalise the bit their care about - last mile delivery etc.

Hi Careful,

Kretinski has always said he wanted to up his stake from 22% to 25%. That was why it was referred as a potential threat to national security. He has now been given the all clear and suddenly the shares are going up. I don't think the two things are unrelated.

No chance of a resolution to the strike because the CWU are too intransigent and have had their own way for too long. The won't back down as it is not in their DNA.

They will lose eventually, it just remains to be seen how much damage they will do before that happens. The pay and conditions at Royal Mail are unbelievably good but the differential between them and the competition is now so great, it is entirely unsustainable.

Main sticking point is that the management wish to right size business without being stopped by the CWU.
A 1970'S dispute, Moya Green and Vince Cable must have been drunk when they signed of the original agreement.

For we all have difficult times in our lives at one point or another.

Plenty though in UK, both indigenous and immigrant are habitual poncers. That's one of the reasons the Welfare state bill keeps on rising!

Mr Kretinski already said he wanted to increase his stake to 25%. That means he has to buy another 30m. That may have been a contributory factor. Unions have no intention of giving any concessions so end to strike highly unlikely IMHO.
