This is a tidal wave which is not only IAG or any other airline .We are heading towards a worldwide recession and it will take us good eighteen months to recover.

Swiss International Air Lines hopes to receive state aid over coronavirus.

According to Klühr, SWISS,” Chief Executive Officer, no airline could survive the coronavirus without state aid.

Talks between SWISS and the Swiss government are due to take place next week.

tornado....I have no doubt that IAG will be looking for opportunities to leverage their position in this scenario, this will include all costs, including fuel and employee costs.

let's not forget, the Saudis and Russians will have lost a huge market for oil, with major airlines being grounded for a period of time.

Regarding other posts.........no one has a clue at this moment in time . So pure speculation , rumour and scaremongering by some on here.
Others are trying to be rational.

I’m not in IAG today but will go in as soon as the crono thing is over and they lift travel bans. They will recover no doubt and the capital increase will be very much in multiples at that point. But the bottom is below 200p depending how long the movement ban lifts. When lifted IAG will rocket independent on the working capital position. But in all cases job losses will be there and they may never recover the HC as result (opportunity to go leaner and reduce hold of unions is now upon us )

Very few optimistic commentators about this virus and its effects.
It seems be all gloom and doom.
We like to think that the authorities know something, but history proves that they are bungling idiots.

Last biggie was 1968, I think. Its the time to develop a drug, test it and get it to market, possible 2nd more virulent strain, etc.
I do not wish to sound pessimistic but I do not agree with the couple of months and it's all over view some are posting here but all views are up for debate.

Timeframes are unknown. Just Google 'pandemic timelines' to see previous virus historical events and timeframes. This is unlikely to be done and dusted in a few months according to previous history.

So be very careful of share dilution for any bailouts from whoever. If billions are needed then there could be twice as many shares in issue which would equate to a 50% share price reduction. No one knows, it's a gamble during these times. Oops again, I am meant to be on the sidelines today!

If US routes was open I say 300p, now closed, 195p, New York flights were worth a billion alone.I think gov bail out will be needed, like the banks 2008.

Easyjet cancels all flights from UK to Spain.

The airline said it will operate their normal schedule today (Sunday) and Monday 16 March to try and allow as many people as possible to return home.

However, all flights from March 17 will be cancelled.

GOV is not in a position to insist on anything , especially with flights being cancelled and borders closing.
Countries should be working together to solve this problem, as quickly as possible.

I agree that the flu kills more people annually than this.
So far only 1100 + infected in the UK and 21 deaths.
It will of course increase but will it be greater than the annual flu ?

Will this virus cause more deaths than the flu in a bad year?

None of us knows, but the UK 28,000 deaths from flu in 201/15, with an annual total of 17,000 p.a. over 5 years, passed without panic or comment.
It barely made the news.

Flu kills off older people, especially in a bad year.
Some years are mild. About 2000 deaths is mild.

I do not know the subtle differences between coronavirus and flu, and the flu virus changes each year. The symptoms seem similar.

The NHS was predicted to struggle this winter if there was a flu epidemic.

I've bought a third of my allocation at 430ish and another 1/6th at 400. Bring on the lower prices. This is never going to make more than 3pc of my portfolio once I'm down done. So if it goes bust its an annoyance. Nothing more. If not which is still more likely by far then it'll help my portfolio beat the market.... eventually!

dround,

Is this worse then the 9/11 fallout?

To me it is...I keep thinking drip buying is a good idea, but even this idea is now too soon after the weekend news

The sooner they suspend the FTSE / Dow etc the better.
It's just adding to the hysteria.
