I'd agree...when I see the name Simon Calder...don't even bother to read.

At the end of the day....we have Willie Walsh in control.

The new flights are booked through the Vueling website...potentially confusing for customers.

The subsidiary that IAG set up for the Niki purchase was a Level subsidiary to comply with austrian requirements. They did win Niki and were left with the subsidiary company , so they have decided to use it , branded as Level.
It appears to be a subsidiary of aer lingus ???

If any of that makes sense.

I don't take issue with the 3 weeks notice....6 months would benefit the competition.

The destinations are as follows,

Malaga
Paris
London
Alicante
Dubrovnik
Milan
Valencia
Barcelona
Ibiza
Sardinia
Bilbao
Larnaca
Mallorca

No doubt that Gatwick shall be one of the new destinations from Vienna. Although, I'm confused, surely they'd have been better moving into Vienna under the Vueling brand?

When you check the flyLevel website....the destination map redirects you to the vueling site!

Astonishing' move
Vienna airport has attracted expansion from other low-cost services recently, including EasyJet, Lufthansa's low-cost arm Eurowings and Hungary's Wizz Air.
The travel editor of the Independent, Simon Calder, said IAG's decision was a bold move that would mean a "massive fares war".
"British Airways' parent company has astonished the aviation market by launching a new Vienna-based subsidiary with less than three weeks' notice," he said.
Level started in Barcelona last March to compete with other long-haul budget airlines, such as Norwegian Air Shuttle and Wow Air.
It expanded that business by basing two planes at Paris Orly airport and launching new routes. Another development saw it buy landing extra slots at Gatwick airport from the now-defunct Monarch airlines, slots analysts said could be used to expand its Level operations.
Willie Walsh, IAG's chief executive, said: "We are launching this new short-haul subsidiary to provide Austrian consumers with more flight choices across Europe. These flights will be branded as Level to build upon the huge success of our new long-haul low-cost operation."

He was always going to compete with Niki after losing the bid.
They had created the subsidiary for Niki and now might as well use it .

Expansion continues...Level enters the short haul market.

LONDON (Aged-Dow Jones) - International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG) announced Thursday the launch of its new low-cost Austrian airline called Level and dedicated to short-haul flights.

Level will have a fleet of four Airbus A321s and will be based at Vienna Airport, from where it will serve 14 European destinations as of 17 July

I think the problem will always grow to fill the space chief...in this case aircraft holding at LHR.
After 3 runways , they will want 4 then 5 etc .
Expanding at other airports, or building a new one fit for purpose is the answer.

And 8 years away. Just to build a runway ffs!The Chinese have probably built 20 airports and a zillion miles of train track in that time.It took 10 years to build T5.Honestly, we're soooooo slow at getting anything done, its out of date by the time its done!

Yup. All those planes circling overhead queuing to land.Something the global warming nutjobs ought to think about before crying over another runway.

I agree Chief. A new airport fit for purpose built anywhere but Heathrow would have been ideal. The income generated from planning on the old LHR would have been in the billions.
I know LHR well and it is already over capacity. You just have to look at how many aircraft have to hold at lhr because there is no space on the ground.
The cost must be substantial and a large negative impact on the environment.

I also agree about leaders lacking vision ..........

m1k3y1

Our leaders don't have the vision/balls to sanction another runway at Gatwick etc etc.A third runway at LHR is just a stop gap too.A Boris Island type plan was the way forward but hey ho, much to bravado for our political masters. When its full again in 20 years (if it gets built), they'll be wondering which towns to bulldoze for the 4th runway.

Agree neil but doesn't explain the drop in the days before XD.
personally I think LGW should get another runway as with other regional airports.
LHR can't cope now and won't be able to cope when it gets bigger.
Nothing will change except having a larger problem.

That's true, in fact bear raid on IAG, on 3rd runway, not for another 12 years if at all and I agree with Walsh it will never be built.
