TWIC in effect at more ports

By Kathleen Hickey, Special to GCN

The Homeland Security Department this month added the seaports of Ontonagon, Mich., Canaveral, Fla., and Morehead City, N.C., to the list of facilities that have adopted the technology for the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

Those ports are part of several set to be included in the worker-credential project during the next several weeks.

The TWIC program requires a common identity card for all personnel who require unescorted access to port facilities and vessels along with seafarers who hold Coast Guard-issued credentials.

The TWIC smart card includes biometric data of the holder's fingerprints. The program's rules require a thorough background check for employees who receive the TWIC cards to screen out known security threats.

Other ports slated for TWIC program roll outs this month include Victoria, Texas; Kahului, Hawaii; Portland, Ore; Bourne, Mass.; Green Bay, Wis.; Pittsburgh; Texas City, Texas; Kauai, Hawaii ; Salisbury, Md.; and Toledo, Ohio. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) plans call for 147 ports to adopt TWIC technology by the end of 2008.

During the initial TWIC rollout, port entry guards and other security officials will use the credentials as visual "flash passes." In other words, the cards' machine-readable biometric features won't come into play because the specialized reading units needed to access that data aren't ready.

TSA has delayed deployment of the TWIC card readers until the agency is satisfied that the reader units will be able to withstand the tough "environmental" conditions that some of the port and ship locations involve, including temperature extremes along with the presence of various chemicals.

Currently, no ports are required to have readers for the cards. However, until the regular readers are deployed, Coast Guard personnel will check cards from time to time with hand-held scanners to discover forged credentials

Hopefully Thales get it but its soooo big then IGP must have some involvement as there isnt many companies that could offer a package as big.....

We get the Foreign Nationals, we will get the UKID. Even if IGP had to turn into a one trick pony and just have the UKID the company would be worth hundreds of millions but Im not holding my breath.

I think the company could make more out of Health cards and Driving licences so we will wait to see what happens in the next update

Agreed. I don't think anyone was making any assumptions regarding the UKID card, particularly as it wouldn't contribute to revenue until 2010 even if IGP did get it and by then we'll have had another election.

Am surprised no one has mentioned the recent news....probably why we had the recent fall in share price The plus side is we should get the Foriegn immgrants Card though which will lead onto the Trusted people's card and then the UKID card...

If IGP get the Foreign immgrants card it as good as saying the UKID is ours.

Nice one Igoe....good to see some confidence in the company. I see Oil is coming down fast now $87 where I said in my post 2251 it will settle soon around $80....all bodes well for a sharp turn around once the rock is sold to branson an co, and the shorters close their positions....

IGP will turn around soon...

i see SCM got the readers for the 82mm german health cards which Gemalto are doing?? dont IGP work with both of these???? could be something there....

Especially with IGP working with SSC in the US on health scemes....

Igoe, MM's dont want to give the stock away....you will have to pay around 30p for the stock you want...they are playing games....scaring the holders into selling at this low price when they want to make a quick profit on people trying to take advantage of the low price.....if you buy the order in smaller chunks you may get it all for less than 30p but not all at once.

I want to fill the whole order, i,ll ring when i get back later not at home at the moment.

the interesting thing is they are not looking for a seller, because there sell limit is still 5000, surely you would think they would lift the limit if they have a buyer.
its like they arent looking for any business or they don,t want to many shares to get into the same hands, so they can keep the share liquid.
i,ve got my eyes on taking my holding way beyond 200,000, thats if the mms let me.

JUST CAN,T UNDERSTAND the mm,s, they have a max sell of 5000 shares, why that low, when they have a order of 31264 to buy.

Its like they don,t want any business at all.

Think i,ll try again with a 31264 buy at 26.5, see if they can do it this time.

LOOks like they couldn,t complete the order.

All this demand for stock and the mm,s still mark it down.

They been marking this down on small sells, but even when there is interest to buy they still mark it down.
