Yup. It looks like the NHS 500,000 cards from IGP/Gemalto are part of the Connecting for Health programme. Given that it will ultimately be rolled out to all NHS employees and contractors, that number is likely to increase. It's a shame that IGP haven't really done an announcement about it in more detail.

Yes, a balanced article on the fundraising and the company. The only bit I disagree with is when they talk about the substantial risk of losing one or two of their material contracts - it's more that those material contracts are with governments and NGO's and so subject to delay.

REAL ID getting alot of resistance

Fifteen States Have Passed Anti-REAL ID Legislation. As the deadline for compliance draws closer, more states are opting out of the controversial REAL ID national identification system. The states that have passed anti-REAL ID legislation are: Arkansas (pdf), Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Carolina, and Washington. The resistance to REAL ID is growing. In May, more than 60 organizations and 215 blogs joined a campaign to submit comments against REAL ID. There are bills in both the U.S. House and Senate that would repeal the national identification scheme. EPIC and 24 experts in privacy and technology submitted detailed comments (pdf) explaining the many privacy and security threats raised by the REAL ID Act. For more information, see EPIC's Spotlight on Surveillance for March. (June 5)

With 500,000 licenses for Intercede/Gemalto already sold to the NHS, I'd say that's pretty likely.

Imprivata, Gemalto and Intercede Join Forces To Deliver Increased Value for Smart Cards for NHS Infrastructures
Increasing security for national and local applications; greater convenience for NHS workers; combining physical access and single sign-on benefits for existing customers

LEXINGTON, MA – 4th June 2007 - Imprivata®, Inc. (www.imprivata.com), the enterprise authentication and access management appliance company, today announced a partnership with Gemalto and Intercede to deliver smart card management and enterprise single sign-on services to customers in the UK healthcare market. Imprivata's OneSign appliance will support access to the applications provided by Connecting for Health using smart cards from Gemalto and with credentials issued by Intercede's MyID®. This smart card and credential can then be used to provide strong two-factor authentication and single sign-on to multiple locally provided applications belonging to individual NHS Trusts.

Integrating secure credential and device management with strong authentication and enterprise single sign-on delivers greater efficiency, tighter security and ease of access for end-users. The relationship between Gemalto, Intercede and Imprivata delivers an improved identity management workflow solution for individual users and ensures that they can access their approved applications quickly and securely, whether they are locally hosted, or off-site.

Currently, users have to enter their PIN alongside using their smart card for access to the nationally-provided applications as well as entering passwords for entry into local applications when one is opened. With the combined solution, users will only have to present their smart card and enter their PIN once at the start of their working session. Following this single authentication, the Imprivata OneSign appliance automatically presents the user's credentials to application log-in screens when they are opened across both local and national NHS applications. Once the user is finished at a particular terminal, the smart card is removed and the user's account is automatically locked. This removes potential inefficiencies for employees caused by forgotten passwords during the working day while also ensuring security.

"The shake-up of application delivery that is taking place in the NHS requires a fundamental change in how doctors, nurses and consultants access patient data and applications securely," said Howard Berg, managing director for Gemalto's UK and Ireland business. "By adapting the security framework of the Connecting for Health project to provide coverage of local applications, we can help to deliver increased value for hospitals and NHS Trusts, as well as to individual users."

"Providing access to sensitive data will always require security to be in place," said Omar Hussain, Imprivata CEO. "However, security should not get in the way of how individuals work. Taking away the pains of password management means that users can be more productive and the helpdesk is not burdened with reset calls. Overall, linking single sign-on with strong authentication means that organisations can get the best possible security while delivering the most productive environment for staff."

Ian Lowe, marketing manager for Intercede commented, "Intercede are delighted to be working with Imprivata. This partnership will help our customers maximize the return on their smart card investment by expanding the range of applications that can be Single Sign-On enabled and by providing convergence of both logical and physical access. Smart card and identity infrastructures managed by MyID help our customers to enhance efficiency and ultimately increase security within their organisation."

The OneSign appliance manages all authentication access and single sign-on activities, and this data can be used to generate reports on individual user activity, application usage across an organisation and even when users are sharing the same password details between each other. Coupled with the technology from Gemalto and Intercede, OneSign can provide a greater level of security and substantial convenience benefits to NHS Trusts and hospital workers.

The government's ID card procurement will go ahead slightly later than planned so it can benefit from the 'clear air' of a new prime minister, say sources.

The formal procurement notice published by the Identity and Passport Service last week says tendering for framework deals for the national biometric ID plan is expected to begin around June. Earlier plans anticipated an April or May start.

the first national ID card is hoped to be issued in 2009, but we will obviously get a good idea who could be involved before then.
