Irony, I assume, super?

The one possible ray of hope imo is the grant of patents protecting unique High-Throughput Vapour Deposition method.

This "could" make larger batteries viable but what exactly "high-throughput" means is where the rub is.

Don't know that the opportunity was missed - didn't you see the announcement about Stereax battery development for cars? RogK will give you the link if you need it ;¬)

If you are a successful academic happily running your university's public spin-off vehicle (like Ilika) then your main expertise is fund-raising via government grants.
Well done CEO of Ilika in achieving this.

Pity about the missed opportunity in thin-film, solid state battery development.

I was reading something the other day where EV Motor Racing were allowed
two cars to complete a race and now they are only going to be allowed one
as development in battery technology is progressing

Silly and irrelevant question Sharpshare. They aren’t micro batteries that are being developed for this purpose! The micro batteries are for medical devices and IOTs.

How many solid state micro batteries will it take to run a car for 300 miles?

Quite a lump though £4 million

So this is Government funded collaboration including Honda, McLaren and Ricardo. Sounds a lot more promising than just Government funding.

No, I disagree. This is what it says:

1. the project will develop a process for manufacturing the batteries at scale

2. [and] technology for ultra-fast charging.

3. Ilika will establish a pre-pilot line for high power solid-state cells

4. [as well as] developing the materials supply chain.

The Dept for Business etc says: 'in particular how to manufacture at scale in the UK'.

Seems pretty clear to me. This is battery manufacturing, with a bit of fast charging thrown in.

Read again in detail and realise now that the PowerDrive project is to develop a technology to enable electric car batteries to be charged in ultra-fast time, not actual solid state battery packs! I still think the wording is ambiguous and may have helped with the increase in share price.

Nothing there that I can see. Can you be more specific?

The only mention I can find of automotive battery packs is “Battery pack temperature control: Stereax SSB can be used at temperatures up to 100°C.” extremely strange & surprising wording in rns!

hobs - I can't see any comment anywhere about drive train applications. Does the right hand have any idea what the left hand is doing?

At last the government sees sense a lot of work gone into the submission so hopefully it will pay off

Supernumerary - exactly what I was wondering - I can only see mention of “Solid State Batteries for Automotive Applications” which refers to sensors. No mention of high power batteries for drivetrain.

Sad that the directors of Ilika have turned the company into a purely grant funded operation.
In my opinion this is an admission of failure.

Ilika (AIM: IKA), a pioneer in solid-state battery technology and materials innovation, has received an offer of significant grant funding, through the Faraday Battery Challenge Programme, as announced today by the Business Secretary, Greg Clark*.

The Company is the lead partner in the PowerDrive Line project, which is one of 12 innovation projects that have been allocated a total of £22m of grant funding from the government's Faraday Battery Challenge programme. The Faraday Battery Challenge is part of the government's Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, which brings together world-leading research with businesses to take on the major societal and economic challenges of our time.

The PowerDrive Line project underpins the recently announced extension of the Company's Stereax® solid-state battery roadmap to develop large format cells for the next generation of safer, high-power electric car batteries. In particular, the project will develop a process for manufacturing the batteries at scale and technology for ultra-fast charging. Ilika will establish a pre-pilot line for high power solid-state cells as well as developing the materials supply chain.

Further details of the funding, programme timescale and consortium partners will be provided once the contracts have been completed.Â
