Just trying to get my head around that, the point of a short is to sell before you buy and hopefully trouser the difference when the share price falls, so is this fee equal to the difference and if so what is the point?

By charging a fee to perform the hedge.

There is no "winning short" its purely a hedging strategy.
The broker is essentially selling stock now that the client will get in the future through the convertible.

So if they don't borrow stock how does the broker make his slice and/or pay the wining short?

CLN holders will hedge by essentially being naked short through their preferred brokers (who dont need to publicly disclose their short positions). They dont have to borrow the stock as the broker knows it 100% converts into stock at some point in the future - its only temporarily naked. Looking at stock on loan is useless in this case.

I still think it's the convertible holders shorting for their CB arbitrage trades... trouble is the lower the price the more shorts they need to balance..

I realize the disclosed shorts are not increasing, but we should see the Stock-on-Loan figures for this month in a week or so... I'm expecting to see at least a 2-3% rise from Oct.

We'll probably then get stuck around the 40p conversion price on the way up as the shorts unwind against the bonds as we go into first oil..

The interesting thing about CA when you look at their previous history is that although they do not turn "activist" in every company they invest in, when they do the company in question is sold on and CA are at the root of it.

Take Pinewood Studios as an example. They wanted the chairman to stand down but were rebuffed intially. The press got hold of the story and quotes like "corporate governance issues" were used. The rest is history...
Interestingly, at the time they held 4% of the stock.

With Aer Lingus they held 1.8% of stock.

So it seems to me that once they start they have their ducks lined up ready to rumble.

A snakeoil parasitic carpetbagger of the highest order.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why this is so low.
Did the company not find vast amounts of oil?
Did they not raise hundreds of million of cash to fund extraction?
Are they not refurbing an early production vessel at the moment?

Like I said, very puzzled.

Can anyone briefly explain why all the negative sentiment?

Thanks

This is all rather depressing. At least no serious questions are being asked about the assets.

I'm one of those who is convinced Crystal Amber are up to something. Either that or RB is stupid and shooting himself in the foot. And he is far from stupid.

No doubt we'll find out soon enough what nefarious plans are being laid.
