03/1/2005 17:12 | Regarding the Sunday Times piece (2/1/05), HWY was John Waples' tip for 2005: "Highway Insurance came close to being bought up by its larger rival Cox last year, but the deal fell through at the eleventh hour. This year, I predict that Britain's 12th biggest motor insurer, which underwrites 600,000 policies, will face another takeover bid and this time it will go. Even if it doesn't, Highway cannot get much cheaper. It is trading on a p/e ratio of six and its shares are yielding 7%. The group should also benefit from improved returns from its £350m investment portfolio. The management of this was transferred to a Swiss bank a year ago and the decision is starting to pay off. The shareholder register features some interesting names - Laxey, Fidelity and JO Hambro - fund managers with a record of spotting promising situations early. Follow their lead and buy at 33¼p." | sandyfoundation | |
