"In equity markets, housebuilders were the standout gainers after Barratt Developments said it planned to restart dividends as it reported strong trading in the first half. Forward sales in the six months to the end of December rose 14.3% to 13,588 homes from a year earlier at a value of £3.2bn - up 19.4%.

Barratt rallied, along with Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon, Crest Nicholson and Vistry."

Those sales reductions are because they have ceased coal trading operations - they weren't just seeking the coal they had on the books. That is how I read it.

has £75 million of coal (25 +30 + 20) been sold for £24 million ??!!
I doubt it.
So, how come future revenue will reduce by 75 million, 3x the value of the coal sold ?

Quite a common set up I think. Some entrepenueral managers/bosses over there saw an opportunity but didn't have the cash to do it, so they organised HSP as their backer (& in part due to HSP's experience/turnover/stocks/contacts/etc in the coal sector )

(did the jv partners put in 16% of the cash invested in to the jv ??
....X % would be fair since 'they' came up with the plan but hopefully they put some of their own cash or assets in to the jv as well

Is it £15 million that HSP has invested now ??)

but since 'they' came up with the plan & are managing the jv/project they wanted to be the ones to run the jv/project, by having 51% of the votes for control/action, understandable.

the deal today for selling coal stocks helps show the good logic behind the partnership imo.

nice/clever deal (but hey, dirs. get well paid to 'direct' & create a strategy & do deals, nice to see it happening)

At least it significantly reduces the borrowings which allows the company to negotiate its banking arrangements for the betterment of the company

I guess it's to do with the capital structure. Voting rights and economic interest conferred by different classes of shares can differ... Alternatively there could be some other form of agreement that gives them the economic interest.

Haven't they effectively sold it to (half of ...) themselves - from a shareholder's viewpoint anyway as we're interested in the whole entity?

Hargreaves owns 49.9% of the voting shares in HRMS but retains an 86% economic interest.

Also, can anyone explain "86% economic interest"?

Today's rns sounds a neat deal. Offload legacy coal to a subsidiary for cash and debt goes down by £15m.Anyone see any downside to this?

( btw the thing I mentioned as being clever was the part of the Eckoh stuff which is patented, something different than Bixby; but Eckoh shares, for me they look expensive so there is a downside risk, so not for me)

Its less clever than you think. Its basically thousands of language developers around the world saying variances of the same utterances into phones so bixbys DB is big enough so it knows how to convert your specific company's (HSP) utterance into text. Often the text is simply sent to java script that calls APIs to get the information the user really wants (Eg a cooking recipe spoken to you as you cook - for example).
Security isnt really a problem.... The APIs handle their own security.

ah ha.....many software/voice experts !

(I remember that Eckoh have some patents for some related stuff, for processing payments by telephone, from calls made by voice, but complying with standards for security of their bank/card data, must be clever stuff since they managed to patent it & they expanded its use to USA)

Hope there's some decent security controls around that ;)Part of a thesis I wrote last year alluded to voice / mixed reality and issues with integrity with many new attack vectors.Sorry for the off topic, its a fascinating area!

(capsules is not a word that Joe Bloggs is used to using for apps or a mobile phone.
normally means a small container of drugs/antibiotics !)


...I couldn't understand/grasp what Bixby does ! :-(

is it ppl selling/licensing chunks of software that can be used in the apps of others ??

if you have worked in software all these years that should have been rewarding financially
...I went into hardware/systems, I would have done better going into software (although staring at a screen for years is a -ve)

Simithie6: I spent the first 6 years of my IT career doing IBM System 360 Assembler (with JCL and TSO). I now do voice recognition (Bixby market place). IT moves really fast - although it did take 50 years to go from Assembler to voice (at least that is how long it took me):

ah ha !

that was a long drive to do maintence/repair !

(I remember when my work PC had a HDD of only 200MB !...& most of that was used by programmes like text processing

& ppl had no choice but to save everything on external 5" floppies
....& you had to look thru them to find on which floppy was the file you wanted !
.....ok, I had previously used punched cards to store a basic software file/programme !!
....& there used to be big special machines able to quickly read a big stack of punched cards !

...how times change...)

My first IT roadtrip was to swap a floppy drive out at Gullane golf club. All the way from Leeds, circa 1993!
